is it ok to help a chick out of its shell after 24 hours he’s been trying hard but we think we might lose him as he worked all night the day before yesterday all day yesterday all night and half of today and doesn’t seem like he’s making much progress. And the humidity keeps dropping so we’re getting worried he might die

I would, but that's me. Just start by cracking the shell a little more around and see if it can do the rest by itself. Do as little as possible...

If you can see a whitish membrane, try moistening it just a little to keep him from being shrinkwrapped, but not so wet it gets in his nostrils. The membrane will turn clear at that point and be easier for him to get out of

After this hatch, or sooner if you can, go to the incubating & hatching eggs forum (this post is under that heading) and look at the important topics article...very good reading, a must for newbies (like me...I read it).

Thank you! It made it out! We pulled off a little of his shell to give him a chance but ended up having to help it more late last night as the chirps had stopped and he didn't seem like he would make it. It's now up running around and cherping up a storm. It's the first egg I've ever hatched!
