Hatching Emu Eggs

Hi!

Day 44 of incubating two emu eggs my temps have been at 97.5 and about 30% humidity. I haven’t notice either make any wiggles yet. When I let them cool for a couple mins the end pointed down stays warm while the end I assume that is the air sack lowers in temp, is this a sign of a chick?

I’ve monitored weight loss and both are at 15-16% weight loss today. 50 days has me counting the minutes until they hatch

If I successfully hatch both does anyone have good suggestions for feed or other brooder set up ideas?

Your eggs are so beautiful!! I am crossing my fingers that they will hatch for you! Are you checking daily for movement? I have only hatched emus once, and I had 4 eggs that hatched and two that did not. The 4 that hatched, I saw movement in all of them around day 33-35, then continued to see them move pretty consistently until hatch. The two that did not hatch, by the time they hit about 40 days with no wiggling I had a pretty good idea that they weren’t going to hatch. Also watch for the sound that the eggshell makes. If it is more of a thump like a ripe watermelon, that is good. If it sounds like a knife tapping on china, that is bad. One of my non developers started sounding like that one day, and that was another confirmation that it wouldnt hatch. Keep watching for wiggles. Pull out one at a time, set your timer for 5 minutes, roll the egg around a bit on a flat surface, and then watch!

Hopefully they’re just sleeping! I’ve done my fair share of hatching over the years. I’m to the point where I stick them in the incubator as they’re laid and forget about them until day 49-52.

Here is an old video of an egg at day 46. This is what they “typically” will do for wiggles. I say typically because some don’t move much.

Thank you! So far no movement at all I’ve been told some never have the wiggles and still go on to hatch and the eggs do have the thump sound so I am really crossing my fingers.
