The teacher called me and said the kids are still expecting them to be chicks still because they've only ever seen bigger animals and people grow... the chicks are now chickens and the girls have started laying lol

Yes, I have 3 incubators

) and we soon will be taken over by chicks as well

I hatch chicks that myself, family or friends are looking for/wanting so I have homes for them when they hatch

I do not have a roo so I have to get eggs from outside sources, but it is so worth it! The experience is amazing and the kiddos love it!!!! And me too...of course

I have 2 incubators but I'm down to just chickens... I have 17 BBS Orps loaded for the easter hatch....

My hatch went very well. Out of 19 eggs, 15 hatched. I had 2 not grow to term, 1 donated his little embryo to science, and 1 was unfertilized.

Teaching with 15 little chicks chirping is quite distracting! The kids are so in love with the balls of fluff.

Question, my son kindergarten teacher wants to hatch eggs, she asking me for advise, I am guessing you have to go to school on weekends to turn the eggs?

Yes...they need to be turned 3 times a day...unless she has an automatic egg turner. I hand turn mine plus I like to monitor temp and humidity so I pop in 3 times a day.
Thanks, it won't work for her. She would be using my home made incubator, I do turn my eggs at least 3 times a day, but she doesn't have access to school on weekends.

I did not turn the eggs over the weekend because the building is closed. I turned them 3 times a day M-F.

Oh WOW! I am surprised you had a good hatch rate! I was always told that turning was vital to development and since I am fortunate to have access to my classroom on the weekend, I have always gone in to turn them. My friend has an automatic turner so she doesn't have to worry about it, but I just have never made the investment. Is this your first time hatching in the classroom or have you done it previous years without turning on weekends?

I am surprised that she would be allowed to use a home made incubator in the class room due to liability issues. But, if she can, and you've had good success with it, that would be great. My first experience with incubation was when I took bantam and goose eggs into school as a 6th grader. Had 100% hatch on the bantam eggs, and one of the goose eggs exploded, (all over my clothes) causing the school to have to evacuate that wing for the rest of the day due to the stench.
