I had 14/19 bantam cochin chicks hatch and 9/12 quails hatch...still have 12 duck eggs in the bator due to hatch May 5th...all developing nicely so far! I had to rejoin BYC(was calichicken before)....I didn't know my password because my old computer just automatically logged me in...got a new computer that doesn't

That' what I get for relying on technology TOO much...LOL! Will post pics soon!!!!

Just got back from teaching 2 different preschool classes about chickens. Many parents even came in to meet my giant hen, Cuddles. (She's an English Lavender Orpington.) I also brought a 2 week & a 3 week old chick. We discussed a chicken's basic body parts, did a raw egg dissection, & acted out some chicken vocab - like hen, rooster, egg, pullet, etc.

I pulled my daughter out of her class to assist. She did well. My son was in the 1st group & returned with us when we taught the afternoon group. During the second group, he decided to help out by picking up Cuddles & carried her around for the other kids to pet her. Picture a little preschooler holding a giant ball of fluff about 1/3 his size. Luckily Cuddles is that docile & very used to being picked up.

Then as if on cue, the 1st egg had a pip. Tomorrow's the target hatch date, so everything seems on time. What an exciting way to end my presentation! After dropping my daughter back off at school & putting all the chickens away, I now feel like I need a nap.

We took our classroom hatched chicks to another Elementary today, (the one my sons attend) to meet the third graders. They had lots of good questions and we spent about 45 minutes answering questions and passing around chicks. They really loved the fluffy feet on the Silkies!
When I got ready to leave my own third grader whisked away his favorite and tried to hide him in his desk.

Luckily I counted heads before I headed home!

Can I join up if we just set our eggs today? I've been hatching eggs in preschool classroom for years!

We've already had one big mishap- I didn't put the fan back in the bator the right way when I was cleaning it last year. So I thought it was working when it wasn't. I've got it going now, and am hoping to see development in the next few days.

Crossing my fingers as we are getting down to wire for the school year ending.

Your eggs should be fine. Worst case is that they may hatch a little later. I used to use a cheap still air incubator before I built one.

LOL...what a fun day! I was so lucky my class was able to see the chicks as they hatched out of their eggs

Thank goodness we had watched a video a few days earlier...some of my kiddos were very worried that they were sick because they were wet and laying down exhausted! Your hen is a cutie
