I'm going back in at 730 in the morning to set up the brooder. The district finally gave us the go ahead to keep the chicks till friday.

I think 24/30 hatched so far. A CL is having major issues with a herniated belly button area... But most are doing great! I put 12 in the brooder that were nice a fluffed. The others are drying and the eggs having pipped yet. Crossing my fingers on those!

There were 2 that hatched while they were watching. One kid asked why they were slimy like a fish lol One of the chickens has no fuzz on its neck and one of the kids ask if it forgot to put on all its fur LOL they love the babies!

Kids are hilarious!!!!!

I hatched eggs in my classroom for many years......teaching not only embryology and poultry science, breeds etc, but infusing a strong unit on humane education and how chickens are treated in today's world where they are often considered an unfeeling product rather than a sentient being. Please make sure that there is somebody, even you, who wants the chicks that hatch. I have gotten calls where people have done this project and then have no idea what to do with or to whom to give the chicks. So many important lessons can be taught in a set up between children and animals.

I will be keeping all of them. The kids are taking a field trip back to our farm in the spring to see the chicks and see how we plant our Xmas trees :)
