Hatching quails?

Hey everyone!

I'm usually in the chicken section of Backyard Chickens, but we went to visit a friend yesterday, who told us all about their quails that they hatched themselves. I was very interested, and, seeing the size of the run they used (much smaller than the chicken one!), I decided they would probably be a good choice for us. Nothing is decided yet, as I thought I would come onto here to get some ideas about what I'm letting myself in for.

Firstly- How easy is it to hatch quails?
How long do you have to keep them inside in the warmth for before letting them outside?
Is an old chicken coop an ok home for them? (There's a ramp and a run)
And final question - What will be the rough ratio of male to female quails, if that's possible to work out?

quail are easier overall than chickens IMO and i choose to keep mine outside. some of them will use a ramp to go into a coop to play but quail do not have “coop” instinct like chickens. coturnix can flush up to 10ft high and fly in short bursts so as long as your run is covered and predator proof, it should work well. just make sure they have protection from the elements outside as well. ideal male : female ratio is 1:5 and quail stay in the brooder 3-4 weeks depending on the weather....heat can typically be removed at 3 weeks when they are fully feathered. they mature and start laying as early as 6 weeks so much faster grow-out compared to chickens

O.O/ i agree go for coturnix quail since u want to keep them outside or maybe jumbo coturnix if u want meat too myshirefarms who also has a youtube ch from what i hear everywhere on here is great to get from they have both i think good luck i went for button quail but there so tiny there more of a indoor pet thing

I keep my coturnix inside too, lol. They're so affectionate and great for pets, moreso than button quails will be! These rooosters can be annoying though, haha.
