I know what you mean most of the sellers are decent and pack as well as they can. I had to nip out yesterday and missed my 12 Buff Orpington hatching eggs sent the hubby down to the main post office in town comes home sits the eggs down I said u must be tipping them so the eggs are on the side so I put them how I thought was right while I got a razor blade to cut them tape.I bought some eggs off eBay and they weren't packed very good and have some wonky air cells, I let them sit in egg carton 24 hrs - I wanted these eggs sooooo bad and I hope I get a few at least. Only on day 8 today so I have a way to go
It is always worth looking at Sally Sunshine's (I think!) article on how to have people ship eggs. Then you can at least have a conversation with them about how you would like them packaged etc. I will see if I can find the link to it. In the mean time I think it is part of her incubation article. Sorry for your loss of your chick, such a sad thing. You get good sellers who pack well or bad sellers who either don't care or are stupid on the matter and dont know better who pack it so bad you think a 1 year old can do it better.
Ya I know thankfully I have my risk bator with self turn up right egg turner (thank you sec hand lady who decied not to hatch quail!) I have had bad saddling and only 1 or 2 rolling air cells from other shippers (I chalk that up to handling and not packaging issues but 8 out of 12 is much specially because oh the dodo bird did it. It sucks to look a chick that close but it's just as bad when you think you might have to cull one your trying to help thrive but in the end it either will or wont no matter what you do.It is always worth looking at Sally Sunshine's (I think!) article on how to have people ship eggs. With your current eggs, you probably know this already, but try incubating them upright. Sometimes the slippery air cells manage to at least right themselves to the point where the chick can make use of it. I have several in my bator right now with horrible saddles but I am keeping them upright in the hopes that the babies can get out. Good Luck with your hatch.
So the incubator I have them in they late flat and turn do you think I could make shift some egh cartons to fit on there and shut the turning part off and I turn them or is it too late for that I am day 7I know what you mean most of the sellers are decent and pack as well as they can. Well the hubby was right (for once and thanfully he aint a member here on the site so he will never see this LOL) he sat it up how they should have been but the seller had the labeling on the package (egg boxes put into plastic bag with popped bubble wrap) but the labeling was on there so it looked like it should lay on it's side so of course ppl thing oh ok thats the way it should go. So it has most likely shipped on it's side and when stood up right the dang things were not pointy tip down but pointy tip up
Contacted the seller to let him know what happen and asked him if thats how he packaged it he said yes but the eggs were pointy tip down and basically refusing to even think that the unmarked poly egg boxes could have by mistake been packed wrong (i.e this side up/down) and basically said the postal workers should know that it needed standing up tall and not laided on it's side which is IMHO stupid because he haid the label and everything on the side and not on top like normal egg shippers do it.
So now out of 12, 8 have rolling air cellsalso the eggs are really clean so chances are they were really mucky and the person washed them, don't mind but perfer to wash them myself in that case. You get good sellers who pack well or bad sellers who either don't care or are stupid on the matter and dont know better who pack it so bad you think a 1 year old can do it better. It's just luck of the draw really and my luck sucked on this one. so bad day all around 8 messed up air cell hatching eggs and a chick to big for it's egg that passed away while on lock down
.
I have made stands to keep eggs on and it's possible it's also possible to try and correct air cell issues even a little bit at a later stage I have done it and it was the only chick of 6 that hatched and the others had good air cells. Better to try and know you tried then not to try an always wonder what if.So the incubator I have them in they late flat and turn do you think I could make shift some egh cartons to fit on there and shut the turning part off and I turn them or is it too late for that I am day 7
