Hatching with 2 broodies

A couple early favorites. Two different shades of blue on these cochin chicks.. My boys named them Elsa and Anna. And the EE roo will be called Cielo.

Sadly, she/he just passed. I knew the look from the start. I did get a few drops of electrolytes into it, but I knew it was a long shot. I went down to offer her a few more drops and her breathing was much too labored. I picked her up and she just let go. My boys are sad, but they understand. We will put her up on the hill by Peep and Emily. I say her… but time will tell. Sad to lose it, but I know it comes with the territory. All others are well. I forgot how small they are!! I am almost positive the extras are in fact leghorns.

ohhhh I am so sorry. Poor little thing. I hope you are left with a breeding pair!

MM, aaaaw too cute!
Sorry to hear you lost a Welsummer

Thanks all the same but I will pass on the offer of a bunch of noisy hormones on two legs

I hope you are able to find homes for some of them; that is a lot of roosters to have around.

LM, beautiful pictures! I am pleased that it worked out for you. Love the third picture where they are all in a circle around mumma.
I hear you with regards to the colour array. I was watching my girls yesterday and love having the different colours which also makes it easier when keeping an eye on where everyone is.

16 paws, aaaaw, too cute, I am happy for Penny that she has some bubbies, beautiful ones at that.

All good at Casa Del Chookie. I have my suspicions that Tina may be building up to her first egg (she is 7 months old tomorrow)

So now my question is how long should I wait to introduce these little fuzzy butts to the rest of the flock ??? As of now I have the coop separated with a divider made of 1/4 inch wire so they are side by side and in full view of each other. Any thoughts on this would be so helpful!

When they have mama they can be introduced sooner. My bantams are already in with the crowd. The have a crate to run to if they need it but are fully integrated in that coop. The LF chicks and Norma are separated because I was worried there would be drama between them and Petunia and the bantams. I am going to let the LF kids live in their own pen for awhile. When Norma weans them I will move her into my big pen and leave the littles where they are. I am thinking I will put all of Petunia's in there too when she is done being mama to this crop too.

Basically I would make sure they still have their place but then I would allow mama to introduce them as she sees fit.

Good to know. Keep us posted on Tina and her impending egg. I like the colors too. The red white black and silver look so nice against the green grass here. Looking forward to adding Gracie Belle's distinct color to the yard.

I found out that my sizzle is under a year old. She just hatched this fall so she isn't at POL yet. I am going to start integrating them with the others this weekend. My FIL is going to do chicken chores for us next weekend when Tom and I go away for our 24th anniversary and I don't want him to have to go through any chicken drama. They have be separated for over 2 weeks, have shown no sign of illness, the place where I got them is very clean and though there has been exposure there to all kinds of people they were housed in a very open pen. Their "coop" such as it was was only a laying and sleeping area that looked it was cleaned at least daily. I feel like disease develops in cramped places and I also know that exposure creates immunity. Like you Teila I am mostly comfortable with allowing these girls to get to know their flockmates at this point. There has been no sneezing or anything. I am worming them and treating them for bugs and then they can hang with everyone.

Thanks for the great advice I am also concerned about food supply and them getting into the other feed is that something I should be concerned about??? Wow who would have thought I'd go from worrying about eggs hatching to keeping these little PITA's safe (pain in the ***!!!) lol :idunno

I give everyone the same food...It isn't a layer. It's a combo of a Multi-Use poultry pellet and a Game Bird Starter. I give shells free choice on the side. The higher protein is good for everyone and I don't have to worry about giving the chicks and the roosters the calcium in layer.

Good to know! I am currently finishing up my layer organic feed and was going to put them all on the grower feed with the shell on the side for my girls is that enough protein for the babies????

as long as it is at least 20% protein it will be great! Do you ferment? I just started doing that and it seems to work particularly well for the chicks who can't scratch it out. Also fermenting makes it have probiotics and it makes the feed more digestable and easier on their little systems.

TG, I hope you don't mind me jumping in on this, but I have been meaning to ask you about this. I have feed, I have acv with the mother… I am just afraid to take the jump. So many different styles on the FF threads… add this, add that, don't need this, don't need that. What do YOU do? I like to keep it simple, and this may not be a 24/7 kinda thing for me. Maybe every couple days? I do put a little glug of ACV in their water already. Will you share your knowledge?
