Hatching with 2 broodies

I would put another chick with the weak one birds don't usually like to be alone. And you may be able to put the chick back with its mother depending on the health and strength of the chick and also the mother. If it takes too long she isn't likely to take the chick back
Thanks missnu01,

I just brought the Mama and her two babies up to my house in a dog crate. I added the weak chick in with her and all is well for now. I will be up at first light to see if everyone gets along. I am wondering if the two mamas were fighting over the chick maybe. I believe that happened with another co-broody on this thread if I am not mistaken. It may of been ItalyChickie.
Speaking of ItalyChickie I wonder how she is doing? I havent heard anything for a while. The same goes for Teila.
Are you guys ok???????
Thanks for all your help missnu01

Don't always jump to mareks. It is super prevalent, but not every sick chicken has mareks. Not to mention a chicken with mareks doesn't just curl up and die. They lose their motor function, control of their neck or slowly become paralyzed, and the symptoms don't usually show when they are chicks. It sounds like one of 2 things..I'd the sick chick now the same one we've been talking about? Or another one with the same hen? Because either the chicks just aren't strong enough to survive for whatever reason and the broody knows it and is leaving them to die, or your broody is no good at mothering. The sick chick is Inside now I assume under a heat lamp? Have you given any vitamins, and what does the poo look like? Have you seen it eat or drink? Try putting some vitamin enhanced water, or sugar water on the end of your finger and just dripping it on its beak, but not in its nose...and not too much sugar in the water.

Hi team! It has been a crazy crazy week over here - the family visit ended up lasting longer than expected and work deadlines that still had to be met left me no time at all to write... missed you all, and sorry for a brief message this time, I'm sure I'll be back to my usual long posts soon enough.

All the new additions are absolutely adorable! Congratulations to the new moms!

Can't wait to see more pics and catch up with everyone - hopefully this weekend.

Today is day 20 for my Cochin and Orp eggs in the bator and under Bonnie, and I see at least 4 pips in the bator and hear peeping!

SO SO excited!

In other news, Pallina has laid her first egg yesterday, and the broody twins are broody again! Separately this time... haven't yet decided whether to let them hatch something or not...too much going on right now.

The other "babies" are growing beautifully, I moved them to the grown up coop, but they still sleep in a pile with Ombretta (though no longer really fit under, so just side by side).

Some sad news too... Isabel is not well, has had diarrhea for about a week now and has lost a bunch of weight... I thought it was impacted crop or something along those lines (wasn't quite empty in the mornings) and did everything I could for that, and she seemed to perk up a bit, but worse again, so I think there might be some other underlying issue... I fear the worst, and really don't know what else to do. There are no chicken vets in the area...

So I'm sad, happy, worried, frantic, and a whole bunch of other emotions at the same time... I'll save catching up for when I have calmed down a bit. Hope all is well with everyone!

Aw so sorry for disappearing and making you worry! I'll try not to do it again!

Yes, it was my crazy broody twins that - I suspect - were fighting over a chick. I don't know for sure because when I found it, it was far from them... possibly to get away from the fighting. I do know they had been swapping eggs, which likely scrambled a lot of them and I had a very poor hatch. So yeah, not letting anyone access to the others' eggs or chicks anymore until they are ready to mingle.

Ok, back to work for me, but I will be back soon!

Hope all is well with Teila!

Hello Team,
Sorry I have been away most of the week and have not been able to access the internet
well Muffin successfully hatched two sweet bubbas and they are already zooming around the place at 80 miles an hour Lol and today is day 19 for Maddy's three eggs and they are doing great. Everyone else is doing good and is happy except Gold the little old lady is not doing to good she seems to have a sore foot and is hobbling on it but I am sure its not broken as what I have heard is that she would be dragging her leg and would not be able to put any weight on it but she seems to be getting a little better
Beautiful pics everyone and sorry to hear about the losses. I am going to a poultry auction tomorrow so I will see what I buy!
Hope all is well

Hi ItalyChickie,
So glad to hear from you...
My co-broodies did the same thing, swapping eggs the whole time. We finally got 4 little babies, the very first to hatch from our stock on our property. Looks like the little lost, weak one is going to make it. Although I went out there this morning and it had gotten thru a dog crate wire opening of about one half inch and I found it in the other run with all the large foul! That little one is something else! The only eggs that hatched were from my bantam cochins with a bantam roo.

It looks like the other eggs werent fertile so my Polish Roo may not be fertilizing the big girls. That would make sense because my last attempt at a hatch with our own eggs was a disaster.

So sorry about Isabel, I wish I knew of something to help but I really dont....I know that is hard when one is ill. You just want to fix it.

On the other news whoo hooo! That bator must be a good one! Anything happening with Bonnies eggs?

I cant believe the broody twin are broody again, good luck with that one hehe with all the other stuff going on right now it sounds kind of over whelming to decide what to do. Maybe just give yourself a few days to figure it out.
