Hatching with 2 broodies

Good job on figuring it out. How do you make homemade antibiotics? Hope the chick makes it

Allot of meds put into one! xD But its good for them chickens

What a day!! I decided to get a baby monitor so I could keep an eye on the Dot and Banty situation and the hatching. I ended up taking back 2 different ones as they didn't work at all and finally settled on a third one. At some point in my back and forth the first chick was hatched! I was a little surprised because it doesn't seem as fluffy as the photos I have seen on here. It is a little black silkie

2 of the other eggs had also pipped! I have no idea if they have hatched or not as Banty isn't letting me look under and when I tried to little chick popped out lol

I do hope that the fourth egg gets a pipping as well! Tonight everything is quiet and Dot didn't bother Banty. The morning will be interesting I am sure eek!

Just a very quick update - I have to go watch Bonnie like a hawk for the next few hours since I just finished transferring chicks from the bator. We have a total of 13 fluffy butts!!!

After the 3rd one hatched, it was like popcorn, they all started popping out, the humidity went through the roof and between the condensation on the glass and the chicks running all over playing rugby with the eggs, I could no longer see a thing in the bator until this morning... I don't even know how many of which color yet, forgot to count while transferring...

But here are some pics

Now is Bonnie going to raise them? I totally forgot the plan of action after they all hatch.LOL

Yesterday I put the co-broodies back together to raise their four chicks together and everything is going smooth.

The one chick that was weak and pecked in the head is doing fine now. I was really worried that little one was not going to make it.

My 6 silkie babies are now ready to go to the big coop so today I am going to make them a separation and introduce them to the big flock. That is what is fun about having chickens, their always presenting us with the challenge of creating new housing situations. Well I was going to be an interior designer, I just didnt know it was going to be for chickens!

Have fun with your new babies....

Thanks Marie! And I knooow... total cuteness overwhelm over here!

Yes, the plan was to let Bonnie raise them if she could cover them/would accept those not hatched under her. Sadly, none of the eggs I gave to her hatched - there was an eggcident with a broken egg, but even before that, candling had shown 4 to be clears, and I suppose the other two didn't make it because of the broken one... In the bator, 2 were clears, which left 14, and 13 out of those hatched. I'm going to call it a success, especially since these were shipped eggs. And it's a good number because she can cover all of them. Yay!

I've been checking up on them all throughout the day and besides her first overwhelmed reaction, they are getting along splendidly. I guess the overwhelm was to be expected when I kept bringing her chicks (I added them in twos and threes) who would not get under her - I swear she would have pulled out her hair if she could have at one point, when we were up to 11 and as one chick snuggled under another got out... lol! She seems to be very very protective.

I am really happy your little one is doing better! Going by my experience with the twins, and then Cenere and Ombretta, I think it's the actual hatch moment that can cause some trouble with co-broodies... well, and before that with the egg swapping - but once the chicks respond to both, moms seem to get along - or at least that's how it turned out for me, and looks like it's the same for you.

Interior designer for chickens sounds like a really cool niche, actually. I bet there are plenty of people on the forums who would hire you.

And now I know who to ask for help on the future housing adjustments layout once these ones grow!

Good morning Team Broody

Apologies for dropping off the grid and maybe causing some worry; I am fighting fit

Work has been so hectic of late and the weekends have been so nice I have taken the opportunity to spend lots and lots of time with my girls.

I have been keeping up to date with your posts but, sadly, would not be able to reply to each.

The girls are all well and such a joy to have around; one big happy family now; the pecking order still dictates the occasional 'I'm higher up the ladder than you peck' but other than that, they tear around the place like the Fab 5

LuLu cracks me up, she is the funniest little chicken I have ever owned! Being a Frizzle, she has lots of curled forward feathers around her head. She has this cute way of pulling her head back into her feathers (like a turtle) before she takes off across the yard at the speed of light
lau.gif

She follows me everywhere in the garden, nattering away.

LuLu and Tina, her adopted mum, are best buds but every so often, they go all ninja-chicken on each other but I swear they are just playing; it is adorable. Watching them in the garden I do believe they are playing tag-chase sometimes! I also believe I can see Cilla just rolling her eyes at them ... Kids! :)

Dusty is squatting! The first egg in months may be in the not too distant future.

Sorry, already started typing so not scrolling back through heaps of posts but, 16 paws I believe you were the one who experienced the exploding FF? I just rest the lid on top of the jar to keep unwanted stuff out and let the gasses escape.

HBT, I had a similar problem to yours with Dusty and Cilla. Cilla is a wonderful mum and Dusty just wanted to use the nest box to lay an egg. Even though they get along famously under normal circumstances; there was a lot of growling and pushing and shoving and not wanting to have any bubbies injured in the process; I had to lock down Cilla and the bubs, forcing Dusty to use an alternative nest box .. all back to normal now though.

Commiserations on the losses, congratulations on the hatches and keep those beautiful pictures coming xoxo

It's great to know all is well, Teila! I can totally relate to the not enough time during the week, and too nice weekends to be indoors - but it's good to hear from you!

It sure sounds like you're enjoying the Fab 5. Just picturing Lulu and Tina going ninja-chicken on each other made me laugh out loud! Any chance of a video of that?

Go Dusty GOOOO! I felt bad telling everyone about Pallina's first egg with your drought... fingers crossed it's at an end!

Oh, and I also had exploding FF in my first jar... lol! Luckily it wasn't full so only a bit came out - I figured it out from there, I really should have known as I have done fermented veggies etc. before..

Hello Ladies!! So we now have 3 happy fluffy bouncing butts! so 1 silkie hatched yesterday, 1 silkie hatched sometime overnight and this evening around 8 pm the milles fleur or milles fleur/silkie hatched! I will have to peek at it in the morning to see if it is a cross or not. Our fourth egg unfortunately didn't make it. I decided to candle and saw no movement so I did water candling and still no movement so I did an eggtopsy. It wasn't in the right position but it was perfectly formed and had been moving on day 18 :( So out of 6 eggs we have 3 babies. Now I just have to cross my fingers that they aren't all boys! Here is a pic of the first one. Is it normal for them to have the white tip on their beak? Both of them have it!

I am happy to say that there was no broo-ha-ha this morning between Banty and Dot, but just to be on the safe side I affixed some wire mesh around the box to ensure the babies couldn't make a run for it! On the woohoo side Dot laid an egg today! She hasn't laid one since the day after Banty went broody! Also Hitchcock did the "squat" today so I imaging we will see an egg sometime this week for her. So that's 3 of them laying now...I feel like a real farmer LOL

We are still doing the fermented feed and the ladies seem to love it! I did have a mishap one day where I wasn't thinking and "put in what I took out" Not thinking because I took out 24 spoonfulls wet and added 24 dry spoonfuls. I woke up in the morning to quite the mess! So for those doing the FF how long do you leave it in with the babies per day before removing it? I put some in this morning but noones eating yet so I fed some to Banty on the nest and just left it in there.

@16 paws you can come fix up my coop any day! I would like the Martha Stewart special please
big_smile.png
How old are your silkies now that you are putting in? I have a mind like a sieve.

@Teila Good to hear your egg drought will soon be over
highfive.gif
I could watch the frizzles run all day...they just look out of control lol

@ItalyChickie what kind of gorgeous chicks are those? Please forgive me if I have asked before or if you just finished stating it. I am not running on all cylinders today lol
