Hatching with 2 broodies

Good morning Team

Quick check in before work. Brrrr, it's chilly ... well, chilly for me, probably a heat wave if you are a snow bunny :)

16 paws, thank you for your kind words regarding my girls :)

IC, yep, I hear you, having to part with our bubbies is tough

Thank you also for saying Blondie is gorgeous; I can’t argue with that lol.
*Chuckle* how happy would I be if I could get my girls to pose? Even though Blondie is venturing out on her own more and more, mother and daughter still spend quite a bit of time together so it is relatively easy to get a picture of both :)
Wooo hooo, lucky me .. how excited am I to have the egg drought record! ROFL .. NOT!

Thank you, but I am not so sure my garden is “perfectly groomed”

I spend a lot of time outside with the girls so we tend to potter around doing stuff and they certainly do help keep those pesky weeds under control. Also, unlike some of you, I do not have a lot of garden to look after; not so sure I would be able to keep a larger block so neat.

Welcome back LM … beautiful picture!

Alrighty, seen as I should have started work 45 mins ago, I better get this day started ... enjoy your day folks

i have 2bantams taking turns sittting on eggs. one went broody on a fake egg so i gave her some to set on. now whenever she gets up to eqt and do her business her sister jumps on and sets till she is done. this is the first tine i have had any go broody. is this normal
yes this happens quite a bit. I have a girl that lays her egg in the nest whenever mama is up. Then she gets off when mama returns

Wow oh wow the mega broody thread

Guess what, i havent read it all. Hope your all well. And the chickens are being nice.

My flock has grown out to 24 currently. Hens raised last year are laying now which is great, the girls from last year have all stopped laying so not sure what to do it been couple of months now so hopefully they get back into it soon. Out of 5 hens and a roo in one flock only getting 1 egg a day.... Sometimes none.

The disaster i had last year with one of my hatches resulted in Crow and Stripey, Crow looks more like a crow than a Plymouth Rock so not sure whats going on there and Stripey is a beautiful friendly young boy. So I can make more Plymouths with Wilma... Awesome

The big news is the new import, a 2 year old Indian Game (Cornish) rooster. For those that havent seen or handled one of these bad boys they are the prize fighter of the chicken world. Super muscly, super thick legs, wide stance, just a tank. So he will be going with some mature hens when some suitable ones start laying again.

Oh other fun news, 48 egg incubator is fired up for its test run, we have 7 eggs from Betty and Rocky. Betty is a Bantam black Australorp and rocky is the Roo in my avatar, buff cuckoo orpington. So, we are potentially going to be able,to do weekly incubations because we can use the old small one for hatching while the big one keeps a constant temp and keeps turning. I'm going to build a brooder with a much larger area soon to accommodate many more chicks... Crazy i know lol

Ill do some catching up
Welcome back PM!

Teila...we are @ 103 today...I love it but I am pretty sure my flock wishes it was a bit cooler. So do my egg customers.

I had to laugh re my "flock planning" I don't know if you have been keeping track but my ADD has had me making multiple plans since we started on this thread. The constants have been the desired color scheme..red white blue, silver and black; and the addition of blue and a dark brown egg layers. But the birds filling the roles have been in a mostly continuous state of flux....then there is my recent Bantam obsession which I will be fulfilling in the fall I think with any broodies I get around then. And I like that you say "in awe" Other less understanding people would say "in fear of my obsession

So my egg seller sent "18ish" eggs!!!! yikes stripes!!!!
ep.gif
I hope for a good hatch rate but yowzers that is going to be a bunch o birds. I only bid on 10. I should have known though last time I worked with her I bought 6 and she sent a dozen. These are a project and not yet standardized in color so I will get a mixed bag of colors and patterns but will only keep the ones who fit into my color scheme. I have had good luck so far in getting homes for anyone I wasn't hanging on to.

that it continues. Hoping for an XL bum kicker of a roo baby to challenge the peas.

There are dishes to be done and so far they have not figured out how to wash themselves. Later!

Yeah ive heard of that. Teila has had that happen for sure. Just make sure that other eggs CAN NOT be laid into that nest, or stolen and bought into the nest, they wont hatch out at the same time and might jeopardise the good ones.

Hi, yes I've had my girls do this but by all means I'm no pro! My 3 girls decided they would share a nest like this when it got close to hatch time I gave 2 of the girls wooden balls and left 1 momma to hatch 7 eggs but because it took 7 days for them all to hatch ( I guess someone was adding eggs before I realized it) momma lost interest in the final 2 eggs and abandoned them I just popped them in under the other 2 ladies who were hatching wooden ball ( they never clued in :duc) and as they hatched put them in under momma with the other chicks and she never batted and eye, everyone was happy and doing well! I did separate the coop into 2 areas so here was no fighting over the babies with a wire divider so they could still see each other and removed that after a couple of weeks thank goodness there were no issues inter grating the babies with the rest of the flock!!!

We now have the 2 ladies who never actually got to raise their babies sitting in 8 eggs so I guess we will see how and if this course of action works as well this time around, I'm thinking I may let them hatch the babies and raise them together this time just divide the coop from the rest of the ever growing flock. Hoping this will stop the broodies for a little while :fl:fl

Tommysgirl,
I love your new avatar picture. That baby is darling.

Pooman,
That roo in your avatar is very very handsome!

The girls must swoon over him for sure!
Marie

Pancake is still sitting and no chicks on day 22

I wonder what to do now, I really dont need anymore chicks so I really dont want to buy some day olds for her, hum... After a couple more days I will take away the dud eggs. I wonder if she will break after that?
Have a good night yall!
Marie

Oh, hi there WY05, you must have posted while I was typing my morning blurb so I missed your post, sorry.

Yep, Pooman is right, Dusty used to hop onto the nest when Cilla vacated for a stretch and feed. The ‘good’ eggs were marked so I knew if Dusty had added a dud which I could take out. On the second hatch I made a decision to keep Dusty out as she was not happy to share with the chicks when they hatched and also less chance of eggs getting damaged if there was some jostling for that spot

Pooman! Welcome back stranger … when you do catch up you will see that I can beat your 5 hens/1 egg ratio with 5 hens/no eggs for 3.5 months lol

Bring on the piccies of your new import; can't wait to see him!

Luv your avatar TG!
Yep, I am in awe! I am definitely what you might call 'small potatoes' in comparison. Just got the 5 little girls and staying with that for a while. Maybe if I had more room and was allowed to have a rooster I would get into the whole 'plan/breeding' thing but right now I am content to learn as much as I can from the gurus in the Team :)
The issue with your dishes, I have the same thing here with the washing; every couple of days I show it how to wash itself, peg itself out and bring itself back in but it just doesn’t seem to get it!

16 paws, if it was me, I would give those eggs just a little bit longer. While it is sad that Pancake will not get any bubbies for her effort, she should break; maybe next time

Hi Girls.

16 paws, the big boy is so sweet and nice to the girls, they come running when he calls them cause he is always finding treats. (And he has almost fully recovered from his injury which is great to see)

Cant seem to get my photos transferring again.... I got some pics but cant seem to get em to you lol... Ill post when i do.

Teila have they started laying again? I dont know whats wrong there still eating a bunch of food.... I want some eggs lol the big incubator (48 eggs !!!) is on its maiden voyage. And the kitchen almost ran out last week.

Anyway, this is something i dont know, how long they stop laying for.

WOW! that guy is impressive to say the least!

question for you all... I didn't see my broody girl get off the nest today like usual. Typically she gets off the nest during the morning hours for about 20 minutes, but today I never saw her leave. it's possible she did get up to take a break when I was inside... should I worry about her? bring her water/food closer? or trust that she'll take care of herself?

Trust her. Sometimes i think my broodies dont get off the nest for days. I think this is where the broody poo is formed lol

Pooman!! Welcome back!! Wow, what a beast! Rocky is fitting name!!

TG, Let me know if your dishes ever figure out how to wash themselves… I holding out hope that mine will catch on some day.

No news at Sycamore Springs. Quiet, hot… We skipped spring and went right to summer. Last day of school is tomorrow!! I will scoot MJ off the nest tomorrow for her appointment at the spa and close the coop up to candle the eggs once my oldest gets home from school. I can't wait!!

Hope everyone is having a great week!
