Hi. I am hatching backyard mix eggs from a brown and black Frizzle silkie rooster or a backyard mix silkie rooster with female barred rock, silkie or mottled Cochin hens. I have had a few hatch with decent sized combs. Are they roosters or do certain breeds have that characteristic? Thank you!!

I have to admit, that's a lot of comb for such recently hatched chicks. Very interesting. Have any hatched with smaller combs?

Hmm.... the make a prediction quick part of me wants to say the ones with the larger combs are more likely to be cockerels, but I also know that pullets tend to grow faster than the male chicks. If the majority of the chicks have the smaller combs that would hold true to the 60% cockerels to only the 40% being pullets. But who knows :idunno
I'm just making guesses
It'll be interesting to see if this trait plays a role in gender. :pop
