hatching with egg cartons-Update-

I had a Delaware chick like that once, Carrie. He'd just lay there and shake. We had almost written him off. Within 12 hours, I could barely tell which one he was, so dont necessarily count him/her out just yet.

thanks Cynthia. That is what my dh said, too. I have been reading the memorial to Hawkeye...brings smiles and tears. I cannot get over the beautiful pic posted by Halo on page 12. Gorgeous.

my blue orp egg hatched today but I have problems now... here is what she looked like when she hatched

now several hours later she is loud and responds when I talk to her

It looks to me like her vent is turned inside out? I am not experienced in this and need to know what to do? she hobbles around in the bator cheeping. I put a teddy bear in with her. /sometimes I just hold her and talk to her. Please tell me there is something I can do??

I don't really know. If that's just part of the umbilicus, it may shrink. If it contains her intestines, there isn't anything you can do. She'll need to stay away from the others till her fluff at least covers that up to prevent picking by the other chicks. Not much you can do except wait and hope it corrects itself.

Sadly, I had a baby worse than that. She got even worse, and when we saw blood we had to put her down. Hardest thing I've ever done.

You may not have that problem though: Yours isn't as bad as mine was. Mine lost the intestines before I even realized what was wrong.

That's not her vent, it is the yolk sack that was not fully drawn into the body before hatching. Was is assisted or did it hatch on it's own? If it came out on it's own then the temp may be a bit high causing a premature hatch. If it was "helped" out then it was not ready to come out. If kept clean (I would recommend staying in the incubator) it might draw the rest in and survive.

I am keeping her (wishful thinking here) by herself in a bator but afraid she will get very lonely?
thanks to all for helping as it gets scarey by myself. Knowing others are adding their opinions helps.

Don't worry about her getting lonely, she needs to be alone right now. The other chicks will not see her with sympathy, they will see her as having something wrong and begin pecking. You also do not want to have to worry about her getting food and droppings stuck to the yolk. Being by herself will be the best thing for her. I think you should know which way things are going to go within the next day or so.

Good luck Ozark. I love chickens and I hate to see them like that. Working on my first hatch in a few days, I am nervous about stuff like that, so I will be praying for your little chick too! Hope he makes it!
