It's out but still not all the way. It's peeping though. Or was a minute ago anyway. It needs a serious bath when it detaches because its gooey and has stuff stuck everywhere to it.

But it's still very interesting! I learned something new - thanks!!Birds have one set of lungs plus the air sacs that store and pump the air through the (stationary) lungs. Because air only flows in one direction through the lungs the air sac are needed so that birds can take in oxygen while they are exhaling. It is not "two" sets of lungs.
That does NOT look good at all. Take a look at this, about halfway down the page: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/mushy-chick-disease-yolk-sack-infection-omphalitis That explains why it was not hatching out right.
It is quite fascinating. The more I learn the more fascinating it is. Too bad knowledge wasn't this fun in school. But it's still very interesting! I learned something new - thanks!!

I'd definitely try, but that is quite large and open. I'd use a antibiotic on it for sure. Poor guy. I hope he defies the odds and makes it.An unhealed navel can heal, if conditions do not promote further infection. I'd use Neosporin/bacitracin, vitamins/electrolytes, get the baby some drinking water soon after three days open. I've had them survive with no long term effects from this defect. No bare wire underneath, no cloth to stick. Rubber shelf liner might be the best, just be sure it's sanitized to start off.
Oh, so do I......I'd definitely try, but that is quite large and open. I'd use a antibiotic on it for sure. Poor guy. I hope he defies the odds and makes it.
