Have to make a decision - to heat or not to heat

Quote:
we've been experiencing the same kind of unusually insane cold for the past week (it's 9 F and snowing heavily). i don't have a heating option as my coop is in the middle of a cow field (well, i guess i could park it next to the barn, but the chickens couldn't leave it because of everyone's stupid dogs). i added insulating blankets over the windows and a thick layer of hay (almost a foot deep) and we've not had any problems. i just take warm water out in the AM and uncover the windows so the ambient heat can build up throughout the day.

tonight it's supposed to get down around 4 F so i took them some very warm chili right before i put them up for the night. hopefully that will keep them toasty for a little while. i'll take more out first thing in the morning. the warmth plus all that extra protein should do the job.

we have been hit with very low temps.ive been going back and forth about heating and not heating.i decided to heat only because it makes me sleep better at night.i have some very small chickens i worry about them all the time.since i started heating i have been sleeping better.

I just heard the weather forecast for tonight ... said in North Dakota the wind chill would be -54 ..... WOOOOHHHHHH, that's fifty four below zero! Holy cow, now that's frigid.

It made me so cold, I called DH (I'm at work) to report the forecast. We are in Missouri, and it is ONLY going to be -20 wind chill. Ha So, DH and DS are now outside adding heat to the coops. It will just make me feel better, if anything.
