Have y'all skipped vacation because of your chickens?

Getting ready for a vacation is a major ordeal around our house with all the animals. Luckily there is a girl that my DW works with that comes and feeds the kids. I don't however let my birds free range so they don't have to be "put up" eveynight. That and I have a 120 lb chicken security force that helps keep and eye on things. His rule is if he can't eat them then absolutely nothing else can either!

Vacation? Never had one, at least not in the almost 32 years I've been married. Just can't make myself spend a thousand dollars or more to go stand in lines with a bunch of other humans, whose company I usually try to avoid at all costs, just to come back and forget the few days I was gone. And be a thousand dollars poorer. To me, most people's idea of vacation is stressful. So, I live in a house and area where most people GO for vacation-the mountains in a small house. I live in a vacation home in an area I want to be in so I dont want to escape from it. And I prefer my chickens' company to other people anyway.

For sure. Home with the animals is vacation every day from work and the city! Why spend thousands at a resort with tons of other humans to come back more tired than you went? A vacation is where you relax, enjoy the surroundings, do what you want, and take in the chickens!

Of course though. I am going on a 3.5 week vacation though and I'm crossing my fingers that I don't lose any birds this time. My illresponsible little brother is taking care of them. If I could I would take all my chickens with me on vacation!

Cynthia,

When we went to Cape San Blas Florida this year a guy at Aphocola (?) asked me why did you drive an extra 4 hours to come here when you should have went to Gulf Shores, Penecola or Destin? I said "People" I'm getting away from people this is a nice quiet place.

If we don't go somewhere my DH will not quit working around the house or for other people!!!!

Pluse anywhere around here I run into parents and when you are on your summer vacation from school you don't want to deal with school.

I would love to go to the mountains sometime.

I have a good friend/neighbor that comes and takes ccare of all the animals when we go on vacation. We haven't taken a long vacation in quite some time. I don't want to start y'all going here, but there is life outside of chickens!! And a big beautiful world out there to see! yes, I love my birds, but it's good to get away once in awhile.

Hubby and I went on vacation together in 2003, BC. Or BD, as it happens.

We are trying to get a trip to No Washington in over Labor Day weekend, but need someone to gather eggs and check feed and water once a day. If it weren't for the ducks and their nonstop water usage, we would leave the hens in their run. Our neighbors will let them out in the morning, but I hate to ask them to do it all.

We just got back from a 5 day vacation. We have great neighbors that took care of the flock. We always board the dog; the cats & horses are "on their own". That was the longest one in a long time!

DF and I went to one of those time share meetings once... we sat through the speech, got our voucher for a trip to Vegas, and then put up with the salesperson trying to get us to buy in to their time share.

I simply explained to him that vacations were far and few between because it's just to difficult and expensive to hire a livestock sitter! He looked at me like I was crazy and said "Now that's a new one!"

DF and I did go on a weekend camping trip a few weeks ago. My sister and her boyfriend spent the weekend house, dog, and livestock sitting for us. They enjoyed it, but since they work during the week, our vacations are limited to weekends only!

I'm still trying to figure out what to do when we go on our honeymoon in September... the dogs are being boarded, the cats will be fine on their own, the pigs will be at the butcher by then, hopefully I can get one of the neighbors to check on the chickens and collect the eggs each day...
