Hormones get in the way this time of year with not on the drakes but the females too. Makes things go slower.

The young ones are messing with the older ones feathers? sometimes if they eat feathers it's they are needing extra protein

No no... miscommunication. The older girls feathers are tattered from their drake. I didn't realize how bad they looked until they were side by side with the ducklings who just grew in all their perfect little feathers.

Oh okay I got confused there. It's so cute how the younger ones are so interested in the eggs. When my mamas start back laying her dds will go in like this is just another lesson in growing up. I have seen my young pullets do it too watching the older girls.
