Having a problem with Jax - our older GSD

You need to work on a 'watch me' or 'listen' command. It's not a problem as such, he just needs obedience work in different surroundings with increasing distraction so that he learns that the same commands apply wherever he is and whatever is going on. Most dogs are the same way (and many other animals), they don't generalise like humans do, and they are easily distracted (think little kids on a school trip LOL).

My dog trainer told me... dogs are SITUATIONAL(sp?) learners.. meaning... if you want them to behave in the house work with them IN the house..if you want them to behave outside..work with them OUTSIDE... If that makes any sense...

and i believe it..because my female saint is the same way... in the house..she listens EVERY time.. but.. if she ever happens to "escape" from us... i.e. jump her dog pen...

she is GONE... she wont come when i call her... forget it... we have to chase her and coax her in with treats....

BUT..if i have her on a leash outside..shes fine!...because she understands the leash...
so..anyways..what i'm trying to say is... i BET if you work with jax outside on a leash..or however you trained him in the house... he will soon start listening to you outside also...

ooh boy! And hounds are TOUGH for being outside and listeniing...because of all the yummy smells that call to them....

Yeah, I found that out the hard way. When I was doing some training with her outside, I tried using treats to get her attention...she spit them out and took off after some scent.

Didn't read all the posts, but wondering if you have tried a prong collar. We have a rotti who we had to try tons of different things with to get her to walk calmly on a leash. The "halti"thing didn't work for us. She would wlak two steps adn collapse in a heap on the floor as if she was dying. A bit dramatic for a 100 lb rotti and embarassing to say the least with her all sprallwed out on the side walk like she'd been shot!

WE've done the harness thing, the regular choke collar, etc. None of it stopped the pulling because she just couldn't feel the collars. The prong collar is great. I can put it on her and she is on her 100% best behavior.
