Like the others, I'm hoping that some of your girls are just hiding. I know some of mine did after a hawk attack.
It's hard. You try to provide them with the BEST life possible and then an attack.

i have even seen a hawk just resting in the sun. omg i freaked and didnt want to let my chickens out of their run. they were begging..... so scarey. i hope your alright.

oh my, you poor thing. the hawks are really out and about in ct lately. dont know exactly where you are. but i even saw one just sitting on the ground in the sun! i freaked too! they must be really hungry. i want to let our chickens out too, but after that, i do , but i am glued to the kitchen window, checking on them. sad for you. hope you are alright.

Sorry for your loss. I definitely would either replace your rooster, or maybe you just need one more, to properly protect your flock. Some roosters are better than others, but most typically do well with protecting their girls; so I'm not sure what happened in your situation... Our roo spurs the hell outta hawks when they swoop down. We have yet to lose a bird to hawks since having a fully matured roo around... Ours even has fought dogs off!
 
Update: I scoured the woods behind our coop and found one of the Ameraucanas. Same M.O. as the EE I found the hawks assaulting.
