HAWK Attack! I'm SOOO distraught. *UPDATE #2 re: Survivor* see post#1

Thanks True Grit. We have great cover all spring, summer and fall back in the woods behind the coop. It's true that free-ranging comes with a price. It just stinks when the bill comes due.

I had a big loss this spring, fox took 7. I know it really sucks, and I feel your pain. One of the things I did was get an incubator, so next time it happens ('cuz I know there will be a next time) I will hatch any eggs I have from the girls I lose.

I'm all over the bator thang. I'm a hatching addict. I was at maximum capacity in the coop, until this week.
Ethel was a beautiful layer (who was on hiatus due to molting) and the Ameraucana hadn't even begun to lay. I hatched her, raised her and removed her from the roof of the run every night for MONTHS only to have a hawk unceremoniously dispatch her. So uncool.

I'll be warming up the bator again soon though.

I'm SO glad you were right! I must admit, I was doubtful (being a glass-half-empty kinda girl) but am happy to have been wrong.
We gave them both proper burials despite the partially frozen ground here in Connecticut.

I'm so glad it wasn't as bad as it appeared. The hawks have been SO BAD around here lately too. I don't let anyone go out unsupervised. I never saw hawks hunt in groups of three till lately, but the past few weeks its always in threes. I think the parents have been teaching baby to hunt. Sorry about your loss.

Thanks Jill. Sounds like they're particularly bad in Connecticut this year. So much for play-time in the yard this winter.
