Hawk attack! (question)

Jennifer,

I did let them out when I got home last night and I didn't spot the hawk. If he appears this weekend, I'll definitely put up the fishing line!

We just moved and I knew we'd have more bird problems. Sure enough. The other morning we had 2 adult eagles flying over, so I stayed out with my ducks. Then we had 5 juvenile eagles come through. Then we had a handful of osprey (sea hawks) come through. Then we had a turkey vulture circle over (he was eyeing my fat orange & white cat). All of this was within half an hours time. I think the juvenile eagles circled back, but I was still outside with my birds, so they took off. MAN!

I'm thinking about trying the CD trick.

Otherwise I'm just going to be more vigilent and stay out with them on sunny days, because that is when we get the most birds flying through. Winter is going to be a PITA.

I feel for ya. We went away and a hawk came down and tried to get one of my chickens when my daughter was here. Killed my chick but didnt get to take her. The following day, same thing but this time flew down into the run and it was covered in deer netting. But it was sagging and killed that chick but couldnt take it either. Posted on here and the best advice I got was to let them stay in for a few days so the hawks dont get acustomed to seeing them. I also built a run that is enclosed in wire on all sides for when we are not home. It seems they are always around at the sametime everyday. So I dont let my girls out until I can be out. I think when they see "big" activity just not the birds it kinda keeps them way. It is illegal to kill one. But I run for the gun alot when I do see em and shot in their direction. Someone said to use a bottlerocket also.
Why are they illegal is beyond me. They are everywhere here. They always would stay away from our yard tho. Until we went away and no activity was goin on in the yard. My daughter would let them out during the day and go to work. When we are home we are always outside. Except for maybe 2 hrs of the day. Sorry this is such a book. But I really know how you feel and its sickening.

Well this morning I caught a owl in the deer netting I have over my baby chicks and they sucker got in and killed 1 of my guinneas...I was so MAD!!! Well caught it with a hand net and put it in a cage...It no longer is here anymore but am sure there will be others. I had to replace the netting today as it was torn in a few places where either it got in or was trying to get out...I feel for ya doodledo and Drakemaiden...it is a problem and a hard 1 to fix...most of mine run for cover if they see something slying near...I dont know how long this owl was in the run but it did get the head off the guinnea..most of them were hiding from it until Momma got there to get it out...then the roos got really brave...

Who were you able to turn it over to? We have a local rehabber but I don't think he does relocations, I would think they would have to take it FAR away!

the fishing line thing typically works my grandparents use it over their pool to keep birds from flying over it

also any chance you get to scare the hawk do it so it wont come back.

a low power pellet gun solved my problem with crows and may apply to hawks it doesnt kill them just scares them away every time they land. (injuriing/hunting hawks is illeagal though so i dont recomend it)

when my chicks were still like 3 weeks and i was close to putting them in the coop i would take them outisde on days warm enough and put them near the sun and shade of a tree to regulate temps. one time i was standing like 15 feet away under a tree out of sight of anything above. a hawk swooped down at them and i thought it got one but i found it hiding in some nearby plants. as it swooped i was able to run over and strike it with my flailing right fist. the same hawk was to be found sitting over the coop in the mornings for 2 weeks i would run out everymorning at 5 befor work at top speed making noise. i havnt seen it in 5 months
