I know I’ll be making teepees for sure!Thank you so much. You are too kind. You make me happy knowing that I could help a little.
if you want to get the poles free what i did was I stopped at houses whereI saw that they had bamboo growing and i asked them if i could have some. they were all thrilled that someone wanted to cut some down and take it away for them! apparently bamboo grows fast and takes up more space than most people want it to lol .I know I’ll be making teepees for sure!
Oh I bet that was nice. Unfortunately there’s no bamboo around here but I can do the same with fallen limbs. I actually see teepees in the forest a lot as hunters blinds. Just never thought of doing that for chicken fun. Big Plastic Owls. I lost a dozen young chickens this year to hawks and vultures before I placed 3 plastic owls along the run. There are 7 vultures in the 1st pic and there have been no more since the 2nd pic. What works for deterrent for hawks?
Glad your chickens are happy and healthy!I have 8 small chickens. Yesterday my DH said there are feathers all over the yard. I said..."Looks like a hawk got a dove." When I went to put away the babies one was missing and it had similar colored feathers. This morning though, all were there. They like being free, but they stay under trees and small buildings. I think that keeps them safe. Also they have a goose walking around free. I don't think a hawk wants to tangle with a goose.
I have two I use at Christmas time but I just had a hawk try and get my girls. First time in 3yrs I've seen that. Will the hawk not fly into the houses? I might create a little cottage town for my girls if that will help them stay safe. They free range on a half acre. We have no trees but some milo growing near the compost bin and their dirt bath. I'm scared to let them out now.. how about a hammock? My girls lay under mine for shade. Help...terrified chicken momma.me- i do both those things. my ducks and chickies have no more than 3 feet in any direction to run for cover. I pick up children’s play houses from Facebook marketplace, It looks like a little neighborhood out there
Thank you. Very insightful and Helpful. Our property backs up to a farm and a row of trees. We have no trees. I've seen hawks perched in the trees but they've never tried to attack my girls.. I'm usually outside with them but not always. Now I'm scared to let them out. They love free ranging our property.ive free roamed for years, nothing is 100% .. hanging cans, cds etc deters younger ones some i think .. the best deterrent is a good strategy, they hunt in the early morning 95% of the time so just waiting till 9 or so to let them out helps alot, and hawks seeing you around is a huge deterrent also, more for the older ones, younger ones can be brave and risk getting shot by farmers though ... hawks also migrate so pay close attention to time of year/months theyre around, take notes, because what gets you is theyre gone for a few months and you get lax, and walk outside to piles of feathers everywhere .. if its time to 'expect' hawks its time to tighten up on security for awhile ...
