Someone on here not long ago posted a picture of a hawk actually perched on a fake owl

Oh wow really!?

You can put all the mirrors you want in the pen. They do not cause fires. And even if you hung up magnifying glasses, they wouldn't start a fire, not as long as they were hung so that the focal point didn't focus on something combustible.

That makes sense plus I think the key is focusing it in one spot for a long time so if you have one dangling and moving I don't think it would get concentrated enough

Have read numerous posts about hawks attacking within 10' of people....and.....save your money:

Yeah, we came home one day to a hawk eating a rabbit in the front yard. Didn't seem phased by us. And oh wow!! Guess I won't buy one then. Couldnt find one anyway. Maybe just try the reflective idea?

Roof on run works for me...
...I've seen at least a dozen hawks bounce off this run roof in 5 years.
This one did it the first day my new flock was out in run.

We have a roof so they can't technically get in (welded wire on top of the chainlink run, piece of plywood on part) but the chickens could see it.

aart, where did you get those cross bars? Very nice set up.

X2, that's a very nice run and looks cheaper than wood

Bent them out of 3/4" EMT. Details on my coop page.

About $300 for what is shown above, 8x30', I added on another 18' the following year.

I have my entire run covered with heavy duty deer netting as we have a large hawk, owl and eagle population.

Many mornings I will go out and find a hawk sitting in a tree just watching the birds in the run, knowing that it can't get to them without becoming entangled in the net.

I keep having fantasies of having one try to get through, getting tangled up and me calling Missouri dept of conservation and telling them to come get their net entangled chicken raiding hawk out of my run before I turn my bantam roosters loose on it.

My husband calls it torture by 25 sets of mini spurs.

But in all seriousness, these birds of prey are protected from harm and they are beautiful creatures that rule the sky. Best defense against them is to do as @aart has done and use a surplus of wire or good flight pen netting to protect your flock. Birds of Prey are going to do what birds of prey do and that's kill to survive.
