Hawk Tore Up Turkey *graphic pics*

I have seen toms tear up hens while trying to mate, but usually it's more on their sides. Immature toms sometimes just stand on the poor hens back. I've seen some pretty deep wounds because of it. I just saw you mentioned you had a Tom.

Last year I had raccoons killing full grown turkeys by chewing off the heads of ground nesting hens. I thought it was hawks or owls for the longest time. I never thought I had to worry about the adult turkeys, but now I know better.

He's several years old and has mated my older hen for years with no problems. Never hurt her. What would cause him to hurt this turkey?

Those are pretty severe wounds to come from a randy Tom. That is shocking and sad. However, if the Tom did cause this at least she got away with her life, unlike some little ducks. Lawsy, it’s terrible what the poor females have to go through.

You had a tom try to mate ducks? 😳 My tom has always been such a gentleman with my hen. He follows her everywhere and only mated when she squatted for him. I've witnessed it a lot. He's never been a bully. :(

Oh no, I’m sorry. I was meaning to say that some ducks lose their lives because of overzealous drakes raping them and actually drowning them.

When my chickens have bad injuries like that I usually give them either bag balm or iodine, bag balm is good for healing but it’s goopy and would be too painful for the turkey to put it on her. Iodine is great for cleaning the wound and it should help it heal. I don’t have experience with turkeys but I’m sure they heal similar to chickens
