Hawks

It depends where you are, but I find the fall migration the most active time for hawks hunting. We have lots of hawks for most of the year up here in Nova Scotia and the only chicken we have ever lost to a predator was snatched as a young pullet. We've just decided not to free range unless we are out in the yard as the risk is too high.

I find tha fall, and spring are the most common times for hawks, and all predators, because in fall, they are saving for the winter, and in spring, everything is hungry, after surviving on little prey all winter.
I have 8 hawks living in a tree that I can see from my house I lost a young girl a couple months ago so I don’t let them free roam with out my dogs being outside and I’m home but I do see them lingering around my yard. Hawks are my only issue and it’s enough to make me crazy I was hoping someone would say they disappear over winter lol

Where do you live? The species of hawks we have change from winter to summer. Also, not very many species of hawks target chickens in Canada and the northern part of the U.S. - mainly red tailed hawks, Cooper’s hawks, and sharp-shinned hawks (might be slightly different if you’re closer to the Mexican border or elsewhere around the world. In many places more chickens are taken by owls.

I’m in north east Ohio

I live in Eastern NC Cumberland County. We have 6 or 7 hawks we see and hear daily. Thy have lots of farm animals and pets to choose from in the area...Im hoping they never come after my birds, who are currently in their coop and doing incredibly well at 6 weeks. Though some seem to be maturing much faster than others.

Im just finishing up my run. Got one side done with the wire today. Ran out of staples this evening...so trip to Lowes tomorrow AM to buy more and Ill button up the rest of the run! I also bought some netting to put over the run when Im not outside to protect the chickens. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hopefully post some pics of my little Brahmas and Australorps tomorrow! Theyre definitely growing well. Think I might have at least 1 cockrel out of the 20, even though I ordered20 females.
