Hay ???

good idea using feed bags. Personally, I use woodchips more often than anything else. Just for the fact it's easy for me to pick up! Never had a problem with mites ever, although I've dusted every so often with seven dust in the past just in case. To each his own! :)

I use hay in my coop. Last year was a bad year for hay and one time I couldn't find a bale so I bought straw instead. Everyday I would tell the kids to put straw in nest box, and every day it would be empty. After questioning the kids more I found out the chickens were "throwing" the straw out of their nest boxes. I ended up finding hay elsewhere and using the straw for the floor.

Does anyone use sand?
Exclusively. I use it in the chicken runs, chicken coops, chicken nest boxes, quail aviaries and parrot cages. I am hooked!! Easy to clean, stays cool during the summer, there is absolutely NO stink in the coop, even first thing in the morning after all the pooping. You would never know you were even IN a chicken coop. Love it!

TwoCrows--what kind of sand do you use.....I would love to switch.

Quote: I dig it out of a nearby arroyo/wash. Tons of it for free around here. LOL Desert sand would work as well. But most folks get it from sand and gravel companies. I hear it is pretty cheap. You will have to check prices on it. If you load it yourself with a pick up, it would save on delivery costs, or they can deliver it to you as well. I hear that Home Depot or Lowes carries sand too. I even saw some 50 pound bags of sand at my hardware store not too long ago. Oh, and some people here on BYC dig it out of rivers. River sand. Supposed to be the best sand there is. Here is a pic of my sand in and around the coop...

I highly recommend you trying it. Another benefit to this sand is that on hot days, (and if you use a covered run this works best) but you can sprinkle it down with water. Just like sand at the beach, after about 30 mins, the sand gets really cool. It stays this way all day and even though the outdoor temp is in the 90's, the birds feet on the cool sand keeps them really cool. No panting from the hens on this damp sand!
