A case in point: I have the worst immune system next an HIV positive person.
Since I got chickens in 2003, I have gotten pneumonia a total of ONCE! and that was because it was going around the store.
I have gotten Chicken Pox and Fifth Disease, which is human Parvo. I even get shingles.
Usually every winter I get pneumonia and I haven't since I've had my birds.

As someone said, chickens are not migratory. Bird Flu is generally transmitted from migratory birds. Tell him he better take down that bird feeder out back and stop feeding the wild ducks & geese at the local stream and you all will be safe with your chickens.

I want to clarify that bird flu is in the US - just not the strain that is transmittable to humans. Bird flu has been around for many, many years and occasionally there is an outbreak amongst birds. You can be prepared to protect your flock by having an appropriate shelter and even a covered run, set up to keep small wild birds out and your chickens in during such an outbreak. Altho the odds of one occurring are pretty unlikely.

Another thing we talked about was the big poultry producers. It seems that a huge amount of people feel they will be the ones bringing it into the country. That is ridiculous. They are more careful than anyone. Why? Money. If they have an outbreak, they are out of business. The current practice is that if there is the slightest hint that there is an infection OF ANY KIND, the whole house is put down. There is no avian flu in North America. We hope that it stays that way, of course, but we should all be educated on the matter. Take a class, go to your Ag Extension office, go to you local Homeland Security office and get the FACTS, not what old Uncle Ed says out of ignorance.

To all that have posted answers, couldn't agree more.....I have yet to be told my chickens will be the death of me because of bird flu...but I'm waiting
