I am so sorry.

Please don't feel guilty, it is not your fault that someone else was irresponsible with their dog. It is also very unlikely that checking on them earlier would have made a difference since the dog was still there it's likely that it had just happened shortly before you discovered this.

So sad and so mad. So horrifying and terrifying for birds to go through attacks like this. I hope you still have the dog? If it has people, they must be found and held accountable. Seems these utterly heartwrenching situations that appear every single day on BYC will not wane until there is an awakening amongst dog owners. As awful as it is, please take pictures of the massacre as this will help prove your assertions.

I have to run to work but there is a lot of great info here on BYC re: how to proceed. Do a 'search' under dog attacks and/or under names like horsejody or even me, jjthink (I didn't have deaths thank goodness, but you'll see lots of good info in the threads). Others will likely come along this morning and help lead yu to helpful threads.

I feel for you, I have had my chickens killed by my Own dog, talk about mixed emotions. He is a huge pyrenes mix and won't bother them at all as long as they are in the fenced area, but heaven help them if they should get out and they do. I can't imagine losing them all like that . I hope at least you can find out where the dog lives and hold his owners accountable, after all it is Their fault for letting their dog run loose. Being the owner of a dog that will kill chickens in a minute you cant really even blame the dog. I have had trainers work with my guy and it has done Nothing, it's in him to kill them if theyre loose. I have to always make sure they are in the enclosure every time I let him out. At least make the owners of that dog replace your chickens, Not that it'll make it all better, of course not, they were your pets, but at least make them responsible for the actions of their dog, And report it to dog warden just in case that dog comes back and he will because now he knows where to find them....So very sorry for you guys and your loss, I know the horror of it unfortunately.

I'm new here, but do dog rescue, so I am going to chime in. First, I am really sorry for the loss of your chickens. I am sure they do become like pets; the first thing I say when asking what kind of chickens would work here is that I could never eat them.

Secondly, please don't blame the dog, or ask that he be put down. He was only doing what dogs do. Huskies, especially, are responsible for getting their own food in the north, so they are hunters. But very sweet dogs. Make the owners pay for your chickens, and ask they get a fine for the dog being loose. A hefty fine, so they take precautions to keep the dog under their control. I am only just starting the chicken-owning process, but with 9 dogs on my land, I know that I have to make sure the chickens are safe, and I am not sure how to do that, because dogs are smart and strong, and can get in many enclosures.

I hope your pain lessens and you can find it in your heart to forgive the dog for being a predator. He didn't even realize that he had done wrong.

I am so sorry for your loss, last spring I saw a dog running away from my coop/Lot. I went out to check and sure enough 30 dead domineeckers and 12 dead guineas. the dog went thru two seperate coops and killed everything in sight.I live in a very rual area and thought I'd never see the dog again. Two days later on my way to town I saw the Huskie mix dog run off the road and into a yard, I pulled in and knocked on the door , a little boy of about 7 answered and iasked if he had a dog, he said yes and pointed to the dog I saw running into his yard. I asked if his Mom or Dad was home he said Daddy is here, Dad came to the door I Explained about his dog killing all my chickens ,his answer I've never owned a DOG in my life . oh well what do you do ,he is the one that has to live life as a liar.
