Heat Lamp Issues

Hi

,
One interesting thing I learned last night. Another poster and I were conversing
about how we had 250 red heat lamps at 90 degrees, yet our baby chicks
seemed to be sweltering. Ffinally last night I was sitting in on a different thread
and a poster said that the difference between incandescent and heat lamps was:
1. the incandescent warmed the general area.
2. the red heat lamps warmed the objects in the general area as well as the area itself..
Bingo! The chicks were getting individually heated by the red heat lamps. While
the incandescent warmed the general area. Ok. Light bulb goes on finally and
I swapped out the 250 reds for 60 watt incandescent. Now they are much happier.
One thing to watch with the blubs is to make sure they aren't coated with Teflon.
Some of the "outdoor" and "rugged" and other type bulbs are. When that Teflon
gets hot, it gives off a fume that is poisonous to poultry. I read on BYC of one lady
who put unknowingly one in her coop and the next day she went out and all 17 of
her birds were dead.
Best,
Karen in western PA
