Heat lamp & nearly a fire - Alternatives?

I'm using 11 in. flexwatt tape hooked to my reptipro thermostat. Seems to be working just fine at the moment...but its been less than a day. So...we'll see.

i've got two 75 watt lamp bulbs right now after my "brooder light" shattered on me... i've got one on a clip-on lamp that is hanging really low, maybe 8 " of the bottom, and another that's about 1 1/2 ft off the bottom on the other side of the brooder. my brooder's just an old rabbit cage that i put sides on teh wall, so it's not that big, and so far this is working perfectly. no worries about fires b/c it's just like having a normal lamp on, because that's what they are! lol. neither are touching anything, and i actually have the one clipped on the outside brooder and it had been touching wood all night and no problem.

For those of you with the Brinsea, I just got one and tested it out with a thermometer, it doesn't seem to read higher than the 80-85 range underneath,,Am wondering if ANYONE with the Brinsea has had higher temps with theirs?

I am getting 3 day old chicks this week, and know heat should be around 90-95 first week, I may pm a couple of you since I'm not sure owners with the brinsea will see this question.
Thanks
Diane

Its only 18w for the ECOGLO 20 takes a while to heat up its mass and the mass under it. I have both the 20 and 50 Me and my birds love them.Have raised 5 different batches with them almost 200 Quail this year and 1 batch of 13 Chuckars. All the above birds are more sensitive to Cold than Chics,,, I suspect because there so small ..But out of all them hatched, tell they were 4 weeks old I lost 6 and a few of those 6 were not right when they hatched..I sure am happy with mine..cva34

well I left it plugged in for an hour and a half, and the temp didn't go above 80..

I have three brinsea ecoglows and have raised a dozen batches of chicks under them. It's a different way of heating and a regular thermometer isn't going to be accurate. All of my chicks have done excellently under the ecoglows and no fire risk!

I'll definitely try it with the chicks, I'm sure I'll know by them whether they are fine or cold..thanks:)
