What is the difference in a heat bulb and an infrared bulb or are they the same thing? All the red bulbs I look at say infrared and we wanted to use red this year.

Anything that emits heat is infrared, including the heat coming off your body. Some animals, including your chickens, can see the infrared light waves radiating off your body as well as other warm objects. Chickens can see ultraviolet, too, and we humans can't. So, tell me who's smarter now.

An ordinary 100 watt incandescent light bulb will give off infrared light waves even though you don't see the red part of it. Your chickens do, though. Fascinating, huh?

The red heat lamp has red glass over it, which isn't really the infrared, which is too far down toward the end of the light spectrum for human eyes to see.
