I found it easier to change bulb wattages than to try to find higher places to clip the lamp. I brood inside and don't want to put a hook on the ceiling to hang from. A thermostat would probably be too much effort since the chicks can regulate their own temp by being closer or farther from the center of light provided your brooder is big enough.
