When do you turn your heat lamp on?

Another thing you could do is put some thread locker (e.g., Loktite) on the thread of the screw that draws the clamp together to keep it from loosening. IMO that's the weakest link in these kinds of lamp heaters. That ceramic piece is only held in by friction.

Bulb will be in the way. Doing same on outside would work.
Yes you would not be able to go straight thru. Would have to take buld out and mold the wire to the inside shape and reinsert buld.
I will say this I have been in and out a few times this morning, my rabbits water bottle tip keeps freezing. The chickens do appreciate the heat source every time I go a few different ones are in front of it. I also don't notice any issues with both Roo's combs/wattles. Very happy so far.

In the name of safety ... mostly if some one is going to use a heat lamb/bulb for warming chickens ...

While it is possible to report that "a heat lamp was the cause of the fire" ... once the coop is just a smoldering pile of ashes ... of course the heat lamp is not still "hanging secured" obviously in the OP's pictures, there would be evidence of the chains ...

What we don't know is where extra chains are not used ... did the fire START because of the clamp??? Or did dust build up on the bulb, ignite ... and fall into the coop litter???

If your gonna use a heat lamp ... for more than a quick cold snap ... like all winter, or even just leaving it our in the coop all the time, but only turning it on occasionally ... make sure you clean the dust off!

Just a suggestion. See the bent wire (that connects to the shield) that the middle chain is connected to? It can spread apart and come loose. Perhaps some heat resistent tape (like foil tape) wrapped around it to keep it from spreading would be a good idea.
Just wrapping some wire around it a few turns over the loop would work.

They have a 250 watt one ever try that wattage? with you being familiar with these do you feel the heat just like with the red bulb? If these types of bulbs are dropped do they shatter into pieces? Or does what looks like a plastic coating keep everything together? What is the coating?
Mine is 100 W. If I hold my hand a foot in front of it I fee warmth. My coop is about 60 or 70 cubic feet inside, currently 7 large fowl chickens, but in the past I've had less. It's too large a space for their combined body heat to make a big difference.

The manufacturer says there is no coating on them. I have the lamp in a wire cage clamp lamp that is sold specifically for these, and that is wrapped with hardware cloth.

This is a view looking straight up at the ceiling.
Not sure if you can see, but it's screwed and strapped to the ceiling.

And I have it plugged into one of these along with a timer, so it only runs for a couple hours at a time.
