When do you turn your heat lamp on?

I got it, it may help though no denying that.May warm up enough if they go in front of it from time to time to help get warmed back up and increase circulation in that area.

Heat lamps heat via radiant infrared (IR) heat. In other words they don't heat the air, they heat objects that absorb IR (air basically doesn't). The coop can be ice cold, but if the IR is hitting their combs and wattles it will warm them up.

if you use a lamp with a standard bulb socket, use these, sold in the reptile section of pet stores, not the glass bulbs. Much safer and more reliable. They cost more, but last so much longer that they pay for themselves.
Reptile Ceramic Infrared Heat Emitter,110V 75W/100W/150W Infrared Bulb

They have a 250 watt one ever try that wattage? with you being familiar with these do you feel the heat just like with the red buld? If these types of bulds are dropped do they shatter into pieces? Or does what looks like a plastic coating keep everything together? What is the coating?

The 60W I tried did not project a great 'circle of heat'....
....real(too) hot right under it, but heat drops quickly as you move away from center.

Just a suggestion. See the bent wire (that connects to the shield) that the middle chain is connected to? It can spread apart and come loose. Perhaps some heat resistent tape (like foil tape) wrapped around it to keep it from spreading would be a good idea.

I see it yes the one that goes to the ceiling. I took it off and squeezed it some to tighten the hold some more. That is why I also have the backup chain immediately behind it. If I did put something I do not believe I would use duct tape due to the potential flammability of it. I was thinking of running a wire loop thru those holes so it would be sold.
