Heat Lamps

That's another reason to keep meaties seperate from other chicks. As for an answer to your question, they can be off of heat when they are feathered out- usually around 3 weeks.

It would work because you could then move them to their own brooder with their own heat lamp to wean off from.

As of now my meaties (cornish x) and laying pullets are still together (4 weeks old -- going to see how far I can go) They are pretty much completely feathered out and do run about outside -- they have their own run. I do leave the heat lamp plugged in still if it's particularly chilly out (really just at night now). I go by them telling me -- if they are all huddled together or are the running about.
