I made a water heater out of a metal feed pan and a clay flower pot. I put the bulb in the insulated galv. base and put the pot over it. I then put 2 bungee cords on to hold my waterer on. We have had alot of frigid days in Michigan this winter and I have had zero freeze ups.

Do you have any pictures of the feed pan and flower pot? Guess I'm a visual person. Sounds great though!
