Heavily speckled/stippled chicken eggs

Some speckles wash off. I have a BR that lays spotted eggs as well as my turkeys. The speckles will scrub off with a sponge and warm water lots of times. It is often not actually embedded in the shell.

My cornish cross lays the most beautiful speckled eggs, I'm proud of her every time!

Those are very pretty !!!! I get the plain old RIR brown eggs I wish my ladies would lay something interesting or really anything at all !

Hi,

I don't know what causes it, but my old RIR's (about 3 years old, I'm guessing, though) lay heavily speckled eggs--sometimes they do wash off, also. But you can barely find a speckle on the eggs laid by my young RIR pullets. Maybe it has to do with age sometimes?

Wow - pretty pics, all, and interesting info., too! I wish I had a couple girls that laid more heavily speckled eggs, then I'd be able to experiment and see if I can get a line of speckled layers going! Thanks, all, for your feedback!!!

And here I thought all of mine were defective for having speckles on them!

Hubby always leaves those here for us before packaging up eggs to sell to people at work - most of our girls (red stars) lay speckled eggs and anywhere from light brown to dark brown in color. Probably 4 out of 6 eggs are speckled and one of our girls lays heavily speckled.

I thought it was caused from grains... ??

OH, heavens no - there's nothing wrong with speckled eggs at all. It's just a deposit left on the shell as it moves down through the...equipment.
