We do! His name's Velcro. We also have a birchen hen, smooth feathered.

Can those with eggs share what sort of eggs their hens lay? Size, color, pictures unnecessary but helpful :)

What a great name!!! Mine started bumping me in the leg - it's so funny. He runs into my legs when I turn my back on him. LOL! No kicking or anything yet. Being protective over his hens, I guess.

My eggs are a medium tan, some with white speckling. This picture doesn't do it justice, but they're really pretty. :)

Thank you for the picture! A few of us have seen larger, darker eggs and we speculated because Hedemora are a landrace, they may throw some less common features we're not always used to.

I'm really grateful for this small, but helpful community of Hedemora fanciers.

Anyone know if they'd work in a western Ks summer? We have cold winters but our summers can get pretty hot too. I love the look of these birds and the wide variety of coloring you can get with them, but I'm not set up to be able to give them A/C so if they can't handle the summer I'm afraid they'll be no go for me...

Do you have a fair amount of shade trees? I've heard of people, not for Hedemora specifically but any chicken breed should benefit, putting out small wading tubs of water no deeper than a few inches. I haven't tried that, but I may this year if temps warrant.

We have an elm tree belt near the chicken coop and a tree shading the coop. More trees close by as well. I hadnt thought of the wading pool idea! I might have to try that for my other chickens too!

Couldn't hurt to try! Some people also use misting, either an actual unit or an old hose with a few tiny leaks to make a spray. Even if the chickens avoid it it'll help cool the ground and air by evaporation. But it also wastes water, so apply prudence.

Does anyone on this thread have a white Hedemora rooster? If so, can you tell me if white in the Hedemora landrace is dominant or recessive? I know that varies by breed. I am trying to keep as much color in my flock as possible and need to choose between my white roo and my black roo. Also, is it sex-linked? So far all of my white chicks seem to have been male but that could just be coincidence. Thank you for the help!

I don't have a white or answer to the genetics part, but do you have enough space to keep both males? I hope to generate different breeding groups using spiral/clan mating, and it requires more males and space, but will maximize genetic potential.
