I'm in SE Iowa, just S of Iowa City and going to give it a try. But I will admit I have plans for a cooled, if not fully a/c, are for them in the barn if summer goes totally surface-of-the-sun crazy on us.
Just wondering if anyone found any information for this? Was curious if it would be like having a Husky. Maybe they just molt a lot then and you have to limit the amount of sun/free range time they get? Would hate to have to "lock up" a chicken for the summer, but I would love to have them for our winters!

I just set 8 from my flock. They just started laying a few weeks ago, so I'm not sure what to expect, but I'll keep you posted. Here's my flock:

Did your eggs hatch yet? If so, what'd you get out of the 9???
Due on Friday but of the 9 only 2 developed, and one out of those 2 has quit.

The lone remaining one has a wonky saddle air cell so I'm not optimistic but still rooting the little guy/girl on! Have another 8 started last Tues - another shipping drama of course. Looks like 4 of those are developing so far but only candled quickly, will do an 'official' candle tomorrow at day 7. Seriously considering *driving* to get my next batch!

Jan12, I could have sworn your birchen rooster was mine flying to Connecticut for the weekend! You must be thinking of hatching more this year, eh?

Yep - I actually have 12 in my bator right now, and I'm getting 100% fertility. I'm thinking about putting some on the 24 hour auction tonight, actually. :)

So you have a rooster just like the birchen I have? Cool :) I think it's a pretty color. I used to have a white rooster also, but he was eaten by a hawk during the winter in the snow. I would have thought it would have been camouflaged against the snow, being white. :/
