A pretty good hatching. This crew cracks me up, they're an absolute joy to be around (note: not all are Hedemora, some Bielefelders and Barnevelders chicks as well).
So now what do I do.....I have 2 beautiful young roosters. We got 6 shipped eggs, 3 hatched and unfortunately the only girl decided to free range at an inopportune time (or opportune to what ever predator got her) and didnt come back. I am in NJ and have read more about this breed and am trying to decide if I want to get more or get rid of the boys I have. We are currently in our 3rd ish week of mostly 90s weather. We have been close to 100 a few times and this is normal. Not the worst summer we've had heat wise, 3 years ago it seemed hotter. I am not sure if I should try to raise these guys if they suffer in the heat. Right now the boys are doing fine and dont seem bothered at all. Both are silkied and I love their colors. Unless I get more Hedemora's, I do not need extra roosters. Would these guys be ok in the NJ heat?
Another question for breeders, if I focus on these guys as a breed, is there a market for selling them?
I would, but only because I love roosters and this breed. I don't think it gets quite as hot as NJ here in Vermont, but we've had some rough spells (my greenhouse is an oven, literally) and haven't had any ill birds. My Bielefelders are usually displaying more signs of heat stress than the Hedemora.
Eggs and young birds are fairly easy to come by if you'd like to try for more females.
As for selling, it depends on your local bird market. My extra cockerels are unfortunately destined for meat, but I had OK luck on selling pullets. Selling trios or quads might work well too, I haven't done that yet.
Thanks. I am looking for an excuse to keep them. I really love the way they look. The boys are now baby sitting my grow outs of another breed and becoming nice roosters. Once I get settled on my other breed, I will probably get some more Hedemoras. Thanks again!
