HEEELLPP!! Emergency!!

What about putting D.E. on his backside? Won't that automatically dry up the soft bodied larvae you're seeing? Then you could determine whether there's an injury or if it's internal?

It's maggots! So clean the wound and wash out as many maggots as you can then pour straight peroxide in there. Maggots will burrow in the wall below the vent--literally build a little tunnel...I know,

but trust me, the straight peroxide is GREAT!!!! Kills them right away!!! Then coat the wound in neosporin and keep an eye on her!!! Good luck!!!

Get some betadine too. Edited: When you get it all cleaned out and maggots removed, get your scissors and cut back feathers below the vent area so poop wont get tangled. I've done this to all my hens and havnt had any 'stuck' poop issues.

If he had a huge "poop clot" it would be normal for flies to land on it and lay eggs hence maggots. But once you have cleaned his rear they should be gone. Are they crawling in and out of him. Swollen would be normal as well, depending how long the clot has been on there, it would be inflammed from the moisture and the parasites. Be sure u clean the cloaca/ vent, very well and continue to worm your chicken according to the directions.

Clean off as many as you can and put some SWAT on it from the Farm Supply. It sounds like fly maggots. Quick!!!

OH M GOSH guys....

So i went to the store again and got peroxide. I used the whole bottle on his butt and it looked like it was helping. But then I looked further up and found the real problem. 3 very large spots on the top of his tail where they've built huge nets under his skin... There were literally so many that the peroxide wasnt doing anything. It was so crowed that it wasnt getting into the nests. So I ran back to walgreens and get 3 of the largest bottles of peroxide. I had to have my husband hold the chicken while I took tweezers and began pulling out magots one at a time so that I could get the peroxide deep into the area. I've used 1.5 of the big bottles of peroxide on the area and Im only about 25% done. I cannot believe how bad this is... I feel HORRIBLE for my poor little guy.. I cant even begin to imagine the amount of pain he is in right now. He's been a real trooper though and and he hasn't squaked or wiggled while we're working on him.

At this point I have yet to see the peroxide actually kill any of the magots so Im really starting to worry again.. I'm letting him rest for a few minutes before going to work on him again.

Any other maggot killing suggestions would be welcome!!!!

Is it possible to get a stream of water to wash them out. Straight peroxide is hard on flesh too - it should be mixed with water 50% but it sounds like physical removal with water or as you are doing it is the way to go and then disinfect with the 50% peroxide. How horrible for all of you. After this you'll be able to do anything..

No theres no way to get a stream of water in there. You should see his skin.. its so torn up. I cant even describe how horrible it looks. Im feeling very queezy and I've always been really tough lol. My DH is in there right now taking a turn pulling the maggots out. We've been pouring water over it then pulling them off one by one. They don't seem to want to come out but we get more every time we rinse the area. You can see the skin moving with maggots under it...
