HEEELLPP!! Emergency!!

I agree, cut slowly and carefully to get the "hiding place" gone... then after you see no more maggots, wash wash wash with hydrogen peroxide. After that is done, you can use the SWAT or neosporin. Please do NOT use alcohol it stings badly. I would recommend cutting most of the feathers in the area down as well so you can see if there are any more hiding spots, or if you missed any. Looks like you will have a house chicken for a while! Can you post pics? Hope he gets better for you!

I would take off the dead skin, take it off to the area where there is blood flow, add some kind of salve, keep him away from the others, they can get quite curious and picky. You will be surprised what chickens can recover from. I had a pullet who had the entire flesh on the back of her neck remove in one huge piece from a roo, and she healed so quickly and now you would never know. I used that Ichthomol salve on that too (I'm tellin ya it's good stuff).

SWAT = Fly Ointment for horses
Protects wounds, open sores, scratches and abrasions from dirt, filth and disease-carrying flies. Botanically-derived pyrethrin formula repels house flies, stable flies, face flies and horn flies, and kills them on contact. Apply daily for continued protection.

Thank you everyone for the good advice!

Okay, one last question- The last thing I put on was benadine. I was gonna leave that on there in an attempt to kill off the rest of the maggots. But now Im having second thoughts about that because I think it'll irritate the skin. Thats a complete guess though, I really have no idea what that stuff does.

Should I wash it off before letting him sleep??

I've never had Benedine irritate the skin of any of my animals...never used it on my chickens though. It can be drying to the skin (which could cause irritation) it used too often. I would just gently pat dry (if it's wet) and let the poor baby rest for the night.

Hope things are looking much better in the morning!

Thanks, that makes me feel better.. he's very sleepy now so I'll let him be.

On a good ending note, I just checked his skin again and only saw 2 maggots this time. But they could be in hiding..

I'll update everyone tomorrow.

THANKS!!

Wow. It sounds dangerous if eaten.. My worry is that Peanut occasionally pecks at the irritated areas. I've been trying to keep him from doing it but Id be really worried about his swallowing some of that
