HEEELLPP!! Emergency!!

I had the same issue with maggots, it happens so fast. I was monitoring my hen and checking on her regularly and she was covered. My coop is now heavily dusted with DE just because I am so paranoid about bugs.

We will all be waiting on pins and needles to hear the outcome!

so sorry to hear about your trouble. I just finished a horrible battle with gape worms in all my chickens, ducks and geese. we lost rudy our rouen drake. My vet refered me to foys pigeons on-line. I now worm everyone with a sheep drench 8cc per gallon. look them up and talk to them they are great. In severe cases we used 1% ivermectin. you can give a shot or drops in the mouth. the ratio is 0.2 mg per kilog or 2.24lbs + 1 kilog. So my beloved ollie goose who is 10 lbs would be 10lbs divided by 2.24 = 4.46kgs x .2 = .89mg .89 divided by 10 = .089 so we round up to 0.1 ml it is about 6 drops. Foys will tell you 2-3 drops of 1% ivermection. All the math is from my exotic animal vet.

i was thinking ivermectin orally or topically it kills everything and maggots would die also, i worked at the vet's office for 8 yrs, when summer came so did the maggots, i've seen them on everything from dogs, rabbits to squirrels, i can remember the worse case, it was on my 3rd day of work, a fat sheltie, it had 2 inch holes on its back where the maggots were on it, the owner was complaining about the money so when they were shaving it they brought them back to see, the woman passed right out, i'll never forget that

OMG! I'm trying not to get TOO excited but I cant help it!

The vet just called and said that peanut is doing great and that he's been crowing at them all morning haha. Believe it or not he does that when he wants me. Its the craziest thing ever.

The vet said that he still looks, smells, and feels clean but she's afraid to close up those wounds yet. So she bandaged them and is sending him home today. I have to bring him back on Saturday and Tuesday to get them checked again and maybe closed up.

He's definitely living indoors for awhile but I dont think he'll be able to wear diapers because they'd rub him on his wound. I have a rabbit hutch that he grew up in so I'll put him in there and let him wonder in the kitchen sometimes so his poo is easy to clean lol

Wow. What an ordeal. I kept reading even though your story was truly horrific. I have to acknowledge you for all you did. I'm not sure I could do the same, even though I love my girls. This was another good reminder to thoroughly check over our birds regularly, whether they like it or not, whether the look fine or not. I had no idea. Thank you for your post and good luck. Hope all goes well from here on out.

Awww - I'm just seeing this thread and could just hug you for being such a good heart

I am sending umpteen good wishes for your beautiful brave Peanut to get well and enjoy much brighter days ahead.

(to help build his strength, if he perhaps hadn't been eating as well lately with all of this going on, you can put Avia Charge 2000 in his water [can get on line if you don't have it - one container lasts a good long time] or 3 drops Polyvisol liquid childrens vitamins [without added iron] daily for the next week or so - administer gently along beak line with dropper so he swallows on his own and doesn't choke - stuff seems like it tastes nasty so follow with a tasty treat like blueberries or some other nicely flavored something.)

Oh thanks! Thats a good idea. The vet said he hasn't eaten yet but I'm gonna give him his favorite thing and see if that does the trick. cheese and scrambled eggs!
