I have a thread talking about why I'm getting a rooster, but, you obviously haven't seen it so i will reexplain. We had a parking lot donation at the farm I work at today. We found 2 Australorp Roosters, and a bunny, that someone had just dropped of and let loose. We captured the 2 roosters and they were put up for adoption to staff and students. I am a student there and I caught one of the roosters.

He seemed fairly tame and like who could be a good pet if trained correctly and consistently. Therefore, I am considering adopting him as a pet. No one else will adopt him, we have to many roosters as it is and if no one adopts him within the week he will be killed. The other one is under consideration for adoption and will probably be saved. The second doesn't have much of a chance, as the first one was extremely lucky with the chance of adoption.

So I am going to take him and keep him in a trial period with a bunny cage, a small animal pen, and a large backyard, probably for a just a few days. If he adapts well to my animals and home, and if he isn't to loud during the day and my neighbors do not mind. I will keep him, and build him a better coop for the hotter summer months and cooler winter months. I hope to eventually turn it into a flock of chickens and roosters but, as it is I might just be able to save him. I think him living as a pet rather then being eaten is better, don't you?

I am the mom to 5 Buff girls and I think they are the sweetest and most charming girls. You are making a great choice for a first flock. I would say 3 at least as I do not know of any hatcheries that will sell less then 3. It only starts with 3 , and then it begins. I should warn you, we are all victims here at BYC and you will also be one when that first fuzzy butt comes through your door. Yes we all have what is comonly known as "Fuzzy Butt Fever" here . I know, I am a chick-a-holic also. I only wanted 3 or 4 chickens , then I wanted 3 of another kind and that grew to 10, then 2 more to make a dozen and now I have 6 more coming next week and the husband just enlarged the coop to accomadate about 15 more. Yep I have the fuzzy butt fever and you will too if you hang around here long enough. You did make a good choice in the Buffs and I think the best food that I have found and I know that many members use it also and that is Purina Start and Grow and they can stay on that until they are laying age.

this is my Tallula at almost 7 weeks old --- how can you not love her, she is one of the sweetest girl and everything a buff should be.

Setting up my run tommorow, and got my hutch/coop all done!

Thanks for the help so far. I've learned so much from just being here today.

I am going to be purchasing three hens, and a rooster from mypetchicken.com (hopefully by tommorow).

Anyone object, or have a suggestion for another hatchery let me know.

Thanks,
BB720

Ya I know especially not capons, lol I was talking about how he wanted good egg layers and brown eggs, not saying that I particularly cared or that it effects me that the chickens lay eggs, just cuz he was looking into the same breed I've been looking into.

Oh, and for the record, I think what you are doing for the little roo is great and I am sure he will be fine until you work your way up to more chickies.
