After reading about your household of critters, I know you'll fit right in.
I've got a rooster for my girls a few months back. He was about 7 months old at the time. I'm mostly glad I got him, because he has protected the hens on more than one occasion, and he also "does his duty" very well considering he has 11 hens to cover. But getting him when he was mostly grown like that, he didn't know us and therefore he'll try to attack us. Maybe if you got a really young rooster and handled him a lot, you can get the protection you want, but not the mean qualities some roosters have.
