All I keep are the Black Australorps. They are GREAT layers and very docile and friendly too. You might want to check out this chart on the different breeds and their personalities and laying abilities...

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

Example: I purchased 15 1 to 2 year old hens, I also purchased 20 pullets around 3 to 4 weeks old. My pullets are the sweetest chickens and come right to me, lay at my feet, let me hold them and pet them. My older girls must have never had much human interaction as they are flighty and have trust issues lol. (I have never gave them a reason) lol
I will never buy older chickens as I want to bond with them when they are young. My favorite: Astrolorp and Norwegian Jaerhons they are cold hearty and good layers.
Best of luck to you! I am sure which ever chickens you decide to go with you will love them!!

Do you think 6 months and under would be ok? If not I can try to find young chickens that don't need as close care as day old chicks. Last resort I guess will be peeps

I guess if they are socialized pullets I would think 6 months would be ok. My advice may not be the best advice I am just going by my experience you may have better luck than I did, depending on age and breed. Good luck!!
