Hello all! Please donate your advice :D

Here's my two cents, for all it's worth...

We have 83 Production Reds (RIR hybrid) that we raised as day old chicks... many people don't like hatchery roos, but out of this group, we had 16 roos. Every single one of them are docile, friendly and very sweet boys. Seriously, none to this point have ever turned on us, or, been mean, even with us handling them since day one.

We are always calm around all our birds, talk to them, spend time with them, and I let the older roos come to me when they want attention, or to be held- and some still like to be held every day. The rule is, always to make sure they are calm when they are put back down. If anyone gets wound up, I just whisper "SHHHH..." and they always stop to listen and instantly calm down. My three absolute favorite top birds are roos, even over the hens. They are so gentle when pecking treats out of my hand. Even though they are far from purebreds, I think they are very pretty.

I am glad that we trained them to trust us as the day before Xmas eve, one of our cockerels became blinded in a vicious raven attack. After running away, he let me catch him and hold him quietly while he moaned, with his head lying against my shoulder. If he was half wild he may have been nearly impossible to treat right away!

Our OEGB hens were POL pullets when we got them. The bantams became tame, and super friendly within one week. They are even more cuddly then any of the others. The OEGB roo is a bit standoffish, but not unfriendly at all. He was great when they were small, and even now gets along great with all the other roos with minor differences occasionally. He is the top chicken, even though he is so tiny and only weighs maybe one lb. lol

FBCM Marans are very docile, very friendly, mellow and gorgeous, large, solid dual purpose birds with a pretty dark egg- these are SUPER sweet roos who have a loud, distinct crow, but do not crow as much as P RIR. These are wonderful birds and can't recommend them enough.

Okay... the Partridge Cochin cockerel is very pretty (and round)- like the Marans, but my least favorite of all the chickens, but he's completely docile once you catch him. Great forager. Shy, not sociable, last bird on the pecking order even though he's the biggest, but not mean at all. Takes forever to feather in. Honestly, not sure I'd want another... just my thoughts... Good luck!
Good luck!!!

Thanks guys such wonderful advice. What about a bantam large fowl mix? And I know some acronyms but not all of them lol so the last post was a little confusing. I dunno maybe I will have to give up my dream of a rooster.

Can someone link to the best place to buy day old chicks? I can't quite post on the bst forum yet :/

In most breeds you'll have good birds, or, some that may not be so good- you just don't know exactly what you'll get.

But I do believe if the owners are calm and the birds seems happy, things often (but not always) work out in a good way. Production Reds produce a lot of eggs, so they are a "high energy" breed that is always busy. Marans roos seem the most mellow, laid back and friendly.

You'll eventually learn most of the acronyms and it will get much easier. However, it can be confusing at first. Here's a breakdown of terms that I'd used in my previous post:

PR= Production Red (Rhode Island Rhett is a very sweet production Red.) He heroically lost an eye saving one of his hens from a vicious raven attack.

OEGB- Old English Game Bantams (Sir Banty is an Old English Game Bantam, Black Breasted Brown with a "quail" chest) Our one pound Master of his Universe.

POL pullets- Point of lay (start laying anytime) (Tiny is an Old English Game Bantam, Black Breasted Red) Her comb was pink and not quite red yet when she began to lay eggs. Our friendliest and snuggliest chicken. This girl rides on our shoulders like a parrot, and flies to be with you to preen your hair feathers. lol

FBCM- French Black Copper Marans (Prince is a French Black Copper Marans) Sweet and silky! These royal princes are a pleasure to behold.

Eventually, you'll figure out what roo is a good fit for you and your family.

As for toys... one thing is we do have a few rolls of loosely coiled chicken wire in the runs so they can safely hang out in 'chicken tunnels'. They really seem to like that.

Oh I love love love your photos!!! Thanks so much for the explanation! I think the tractor I'm getting holds about 3-5 birds I'm not sure. I would like to let them run around my fenced yard during the day at some point do I need to do anything special for that or is that a bad idea? I want to plant some raised bed gardens this year and I thought they could help with bugs and that they'd like getting out of the run a bit and maybe I could squeeze an extra chicken In that way without stressing them. Bad idea?

I got my tractor but not all the birds I was hoping for but this should be my 20th post so hoping I can buy some from you guys yay!!!
