(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I started keeping Florida chickens about 6 years ago now.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 5 chickens, soon to add two more.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have a Favaucana, Olive Egger, Black Copper Marans, Golden Laced Polish, Buff Orphington. I will soon have an Austra White and an Easter Egger.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Their personalities have been so much more fun than expected. I've trained them, they learn so fast and I love their antics as they follow me around the yard while I work.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I swim, a lot, plant native Florida plants for the chickens to hide under and sometimes get around the painting (canvas, rocks, garden sculptures, miniatures)
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I also have an old and lazy dog that naps in the sun while the chickens walk on him and three cats that watch from the windows, all shelter rescues. My boyfriend has found great amusement in my chickens and has trained one of them to fly up to his shoulder on command (and sometimes not on command). I work as a science teacher.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've been lurking around BYC to read and solve problems for some time, but never got around to officially introducing myself.
