Hello! and welcome to the OEGB thread.

I like the rich color of Pumpkin...

Shades of what? I have seen 3 solid generations of birds coming out this color, a cock, then a daughter to him, then a son of her, all the same gold color.

I find the Pumpkin color interesting however it seems very broad in use from light nearly gold to poor ginger colors.

I agree, it is somewhat difficult to know what PUMPKIN exactly is. Tkae a look at the first bird I posted. THAT to me would be a great visual definition of a pumpkin.

Pheomelanin(Red pigment)

Dann Honour has been breeding Buff birds for 60 years and he knows that keeping a rich shade of buff its very hard and you get alot of faded buff all the time.. not easy to keep nice colored birds as the first one..

So, the birds Im callin gold are simply birds with different shades of pheomelanin...if you took away the red pigment, what color would the bird be? Red pigment has been added to what to create what is called gold?

they would be Silver(white) where the gold is...

you see how nice colored is his straw colored saddle is? I am trying to bring the gene responsible for that to the Blue Breasted Red OEG and produce Blue Breasted Cream/golden...

So if you breed two golds together, and come up with white or off white birds, they simply lack the red pigment? I would be interesting in finding out how to lock in the gold color. Sorry for drifing off of oegb, but there isnt a whole lot of chatter on this thread....and I am talkin genetics, not orientals
