Hello chicken people :) I'm a newbie and just found you guys!

Hi Plester01

We're almost neighbors! Well, sorta... we're in Dahlonega - about 10 miles northeast of town not too far from Camp Merrill if you know where that is. We're in the Appalachian foothills. I can't wait to get some chickens, but will have to wait until we move there full time. But, I can learn a lot first and hang out with you guys.

Cookinmom, where is St. George? For some reason, I'm thinkin' it's near the ocean... hmmmm...

Hey Bubba - now is that a southern name or what? North Georgia is very different from Florida! It would be solid forest if people weren't around to clear land here and there. From what I've observed, it's about 10 degrees cooler at our farm than in suburban Atlanta - so that is nice. We're in the Appalachian foothills and elevation near us is around 3,000 feet. The tallest peak in Georgia - east of where we are - is Brasstown Bald and is 4784 feet. The Appalachian Trail starts very near our little farm.

It's very humid here - maybe not quite as bad as in Florida, but it's pretty bad - even in the mountains in the summer. Global warming might swallow up Florida, but it might dry out Georgia. We've been having terrible droughts here for the past few years. Nothing like when I was kid when it would rain for weeks at a time. I miss the rain!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! My DH is going to the farm today to get coop pictures for me, so I'll post 'em next week on the coop forum. My computer is down at home, so no internet connection this weekend.

Hi, I am new as well, everyone is so great and helpful!!
I saw that the person before me is in coastal SC and I am in coastal NC and I am so desprately trying to find my roo (awesome bird) a home. Was supposed to be a hen. I live on a tiny island with close neighbors and roo's are really loud in case you didn't know (I didn't, I grew up near Washington DC and my folks would never have had a cat or a dog, let alone a chicken) Should have been born a farm girl....sigh....

islandchick, I have been to Oak Island. Beautiful place! Actually, when I was married before we took our youth group kids from church up to...heck the name escapes me, but there is (or was) a retreat facility with an old confederate fort on the property. Had to go through Oak Island to get there. Lovely place.

I live inland from Myrtle Beach about 15 miles. And even though my family is all from here, I was born in Arlington, Va. Daddy was Air Force @ the time stationed @ Langley. Have had other family living near there over the years-Springfield Va-1960's, and Woodbridge-1980's and Alexandria-1990's and early 2000's.Tell me more about your rooster. I have a rooster (see signature) and one of Lucy's chicks seems to be a roo. No one lives close enough to me to be bothered by the rooster noise, and I actually like it. My chickens are free range, so I don't know whether they would get territorial or not. So, tell me more. Maybe between the two of us we kind find a good place for him. E-mail me if it is more convenient.

Yes, I guess we are neighbors because I am on the most northern corner of Dawsonville near Daholnega. I am actually less than 3 minutes from the Lumpkin/Dawson line. Great to have you in the area!!!

St George is down in the GA bend, where that little piece of GA drops down into FL (it's because the St Mary's river is the dividing line, and it's supposedly one of the curviest rivers in America). We're a good bit inland, an hour or so from the coast. We're in Charlton County, which is mostly made up of the Okefenokee Swamp. The whole county has 3 town & a few 'communities' and in the neighborhood of 10000 people.
